It was a lie. Morgan wasn’t just doing her job. She was emotionally involved and she knew it. It was dangerous getting too attached to a client. Such attachments could easily lead to bad judgment calls, but she couldn’t help it. There was just something about Leigh. She wasn’t like anyone Morgan had ever met before.

“Are we done here, officers?”

“Yes, I think we have everything we need. I’ll leave an officer stationed outside for the next few nights, just in case.”

“Thanks.” That wouldn’t be necessary, as Morgan wasn’t letting anyone near Leigh again, but she didn’t want to offend the police, so she kept that opinion to herself.

“You should get some sleep,” Jake told Leigh gently.

Leigh shook her head. “I can’t sleep. What if he comes back?”

“You’re exhausted. You need to sleep,” Morgan told her firmly. “How about we bring a blow-up mattress into your room for tonight? I’ll sleep by the window. If anyone else wants to come in that way, they’re going to have to come through me.”

Leigh bit her lip. “I don’t want to make you sleep on the floor…”

“It’ll be fine. I’ve been camping before. Sleeping on the floor for one night isn’t going to kill me.”

“Thank you, Morgan. I’m sure we’ll both feel safer with you in the room.” Jake squeezed her arm. “I think I should also get some rest. We’ll talk more tomorrow.”

Leigh helped Morgan haul a blow-up mattress out of the camping supplies and pump it up. Morgan grabbed her bedding from the other room, but just as she was about to lie down, Leigh caught her arm.

“I don’t feel right with you sleeping on the floor. Why don’t… the bed is plenty big enough for both of us.”

Morgan’s mind immediately dove deep into a fantasy of holding Leigh close and kissing the back of her neck softly before turning her around and kissing her lips. She’d wrap her arms around Leigh and slip a leg between her as she—

“Morgan? Are you alright?”

“I’m fine.” Morgan was glad that the light in the room was dim enough to hide how red her face was right now. “You really don’t need to worry about it. I’m fine.”

“I insist.”

Morgan considered. She knew that sleeping in Leigh’s bed was a bad idea, but she also knew that denying the request would raise more questions than she was willing to answer. There was no good reason for her to refuse, other than her completely unmanageable attraction to Leigh, and she wasn’t about to confess that.

“Alright. Just for tonight, though. Tomorrow, we’ll get someone in to put bars on that window and a lock on your door. No one is sneaking in here again.”

“I’ll feel like I’m in prison… but I suppose it’s better to be safe and feel a little claustrophobic than unsafe and feeling fine,” Leigh admitted. She pulled the covers aside.

Morgan took a deep breath and slipped into the bed, leaving as much space between herself and Leigh as possible. Leigh turned around so that they were facing each other, and in the low light, her lips looked so soft and delicious that it was all Morgan could do not to lean in and capture them in a kiss.

She’s engaged, she’s engaged, she’s engaged, she chanted to herself. She simply couldn’t kiss Leigh. It was not an acceptable option. “Goodnight, Leigh.”

“Goodnight, Morgan.”

Morgan turned away from the delicious temptation in front of her, so that her back was to Leigh. Leigh’s breathing soon evened out in sleep, but Morgan lay awake, struggling to relax with Leigh so close next to her. She was beginning to wish she’d insisted on taking the floor after all.

Eventually, after over an hour, Morgan finally managed to drift off.

When she woke up, she and Leigh were thoroughly entangled.

Her leg was between Leigh’s, and Leigh’s arms were wrapped around Morgan’s neck. Leigh’s head was pillowed on her shoulder and Morgan’s arms were around her waist.

Fuck.

How the hell did that happen? She harshly berated her sleeping self for betraying her so, but there was nothing to be done about that now. She carefully tried to extract herself, but Leigh’s arms tightened in her sleep and Leigh mumbled some protest under her breath.

Morgan desperately wanted to escape this compromising position before Leigh woke up, but she didn’t see how she could do that with how tightly Leigh was clinging.

She tried once more to extract herself, but Leigh only stirred slightly and clung tighter. Morgan sighed. She supposed there was no avoiding it.
