“I don’t know yet, but believe me, I will find out.”

This was exactly what Leigh had been afraid of. Morgan was too good at her job. She had figured out their deception—or at least, figured out that therewasa deception—and could even now be on the verge of solving the mystery.

“I think this was a mistake.” The words fell out of Leigh’s mouth in a tumble as she panicked. “I don’t think we’ll be requiring your services after all.”

“Leigh, you know you do need me. Now stop panicking and tell me what’s really going on.”

“Didn’t you hear me? You’re fired!”

“What for?”

“For… For inappropriate use of my email account!”

“What does that even mean?”

Leigh had no idea what it meant. She was too busy trying not to freak out to come up with a proper lie. “Didn’t you hear me? You’re fired! Get out of here.”

“No.”

Leigh stared at Morgan. “What?”

“You heard me. No. I’m not deserting you, even if you fire me. Even if you stop paying me. I’m here to protect you, Leigh, I care about you, and I’m not going to stop until whoever wants to hurt you is behind bars. It may be Jake; it may be someone else. Whoever it is, I’m not letting them get near you.” Morgan looked serious, but there was a kindness in her eyes.

Leigh felt her mouth pop open. It didn’t make any sense. Morgan was only here because she was being paid to be here. That’s the whole premise Leigh had been operating under. If that premise was false, how much else did she not know about Morgan? Was Leigh wrong about not being able to trust her?

She was unexpectedly touched by the gesture. “Fine. You can stay.”

Morgan nodded. “As I said, I’m not going anywhere. Leigh, please reconsider your stance. I know there’s something you and Jake aren’t telling me. I have to know everything, or I have no hope of protecting you.”

For the first time since meeting Morgan, Leigh was seriously tempted to do as she asked and tell her the whole truth. Maybe she could trust Morgan. Morgan certainly seemed like a trustworthy person. Surely, she wouldn’t sell their secret, no matter how much money she was offered?

Leigh couldn’t take the risk, though. No matter how tempted she was to trust Morgan, she had to be smart. The only true way to keep a secret was to ensure that no one else was privy to it; she had learned that the hard way by watching a dear friend being outed against her will by someone she had trusted.

“I can’t,” Leigh whispered. “Please understand, Morgan. I want to… I just can’t.”

Morgan sighed. “I hope that someday, I will earn your trust, Leigh.”

“I hope that as well.” Leigh realized that they had somehow gotten very close. Their faces were only inches apart. She didn’t know who had leaned in, or if they both had, but now that they were in this position, she couldn’t stop her eyes from flitting to Morgan’s lips.

She wanted to kiss Morgan. Did Morgan want that too? She could swear that Morgan was looking at her lips as well. Leigh leaned in a little more.

Morgan suddenly pulled back, standing up. “I should check the garden perimeter.”

“Yes.” Leigh sounded breathless, even to her own ears. “Yes, that’s probably wise.”

Morgan walked away quickly, leaving Leigh staring after her in disappointment.

Reality came crashing back down on her. What was she doing? She’d sworn that she wasn’t going to get close to Morgan like she had with the last five bodyguards, and here she was, on the verge of kissing her! Leigh needed to get her head straight.

Her head, however, didn’t want to straighten, and presented her with persistent images of Morgan going down on her. Fuck.

“Morgan? I’m going to my room. I want to read for a bit.”

“Sure thing. I’ll be right there.”

Leigh hurried her steps as Morgan caught up to her. She was worried about Morgan picking something up from her body language, but there was little she could do about that now.

Leigh closed the door between them with relief and went straight for her drawer. She grabbed her favorite vibrator and shoved her pants down around her ankles.
