“I like doing that to you.” He kissed his way back up her belly, over one round breast, up her neck to her lips, until he was staring down into her beautiful, bright eyes and seeing all the love he had for her reflected back at him. She held up a condom. He took it and rolled it on, then settled between her thighs again. He nudged the head of his aching cock at her entrance. She grabbed his ass and pulled him home. It felt so good, he moaned and lost himself in her wet warmth, the feel of her body holding his, the connection they shared shutting everything else out and pulling them closer to each other.

The pleasure took hold once again. He tried to hold out, make it last, a chance for them to savor this precious time together. But eventually the physical demands of his body and his desire to make Kenna feel as amazing as she made him feel won out and they came together, ending with a deep kiss that lasted all through the cascading aftershocks.

Mindful of her condition, he held most of his weight off her and whispered in her ear, “I can’t believe you’re mine.”

She kissed his cheek and hugged him close. “I feel so lucky to still be here with you.”

He held himself up above her on one hand and brushed his fingertips lightly along the side of her beautiful face. He kissed her forehead. “I never want to feel the wayI did when I saw you lying in the dirt and thought you were dead.”

She brushed her thumb across his bottom lip. “I wish you didn’t have to go through that.”

“Seeing you all bloody like that and not moving... God, the relief I felt when I knew you were still breathing. I meant it when I said I can’t lose you again. I love you so much. My whole world is you.” He wanted to propose. The moment felt right. But he didn’t want her to be reminded of her brother’s funeral every time she remembered his proposal. So he’d have to wait to make it perfect.

Because she deserved that.

They both did.

“And now it’s our time to have our life together.” She hooked her hand at the back of his neck and pulled him down for a sweet kiss. “This is how we should start every morning.”

He grinned. “With me bringing you breakfast in bed, making love to you, and you eating cold food.”

“I wouldn’t mind, because I’d be feeling as good as I do right now.”

He brushed his nose to hers, then rolled off her and the bed. He did the condom cleanup, pulled on his pajama bottoms, and picked up her plate. “I’ll go heat this up for you, then take a shower while you eat.” He glanced at the clock. “We don’t have much time.”

“I know.” She didn’t look eager to go. “Everything is going to be okay now. I’ll miss Kyle every day, but I’ve come to terms with his decision. He gave me my lifeback, and soon the sense of security I lost will return. We’ll live our lives, knowing he played a small part in making it happen.”

Max stared at her, getting that same odd sense that she refused to grieve for her brother. Maybe it was too painful to do right now and the grief would come later. But something seemed off. “Sweetheart, are you still feeling like maybe it’s not real?”

She slowly sat up and turned to him. “If I tell you something, will you promise, like a real promise, you won’t repeat it to anyone? Ever. Because if I’m right, and the wrong person heard it, it could be very bad for Kyle.”

“He’s dead. Nothing can hurt him now.”

She tilted her head, waiting for him to promise.

“I swear. Whatever you say, I won’t tell anyone. I’ll never mention it again.” He even crossed his heart and leaned down and kissed her to seal the bargain. “Okay?”

She grinned. “Yes.”

“So, what is it?”

“I don’t think Kyle is dead.”

He worried she was in denial. “He was shot and hit a tree while driving, sweetheart. Your father saw his body.”

“I know all that. But I think Agent Gunn and Kyle made it look that way. Because the only way for Kyle to be free and for his family to be safe, was for him to die. What better way than to make everyone think he did, then put him in witness protection.”

“But he’s not a witness to anything. There are no bad guys to testify against.”

“What if his knowledge was enough to get him in the program? They have to hide him, so no one can get to him and what he knows.”

Max sat on the bed beside her and cupped her cheek. “I would really like to believe that’s true.”

“I think it is.” She leaned into his touch, her gaze steady and filled with a strong belief that she was right.

“But isn’t it more logical that what Agent Gunn told us happened, really did happen?”

“Maybe. But the last time I spoke to Kyle, I got the impression that he was trying to tell me something when he told me to tell Agent Gunn that he’d finally accepted it had to be this way.”
