“This is a family thing and he’s...” Her gaze went to the wide windows.

He didn’t like the forlorn look that came over her whole face. “What?”

She looked at him again, confusion in her eyes. “Complicated.”

“Why? Because he’s some kind of outlaw biker?” Max didn’t know if that description actually described the guy or simply what he looked like.

She scrunched her lips and shook her head. “I’m not so sure he’s what he seems to be.”

Max wasn’t either, because the guy who shot the killer who was after Kenna the other night was the same man they were talking about right now.

He bumped his shoulder to hers and gave his cousin a bit of encouragement. “Maybe you should find out exactly who he is and uncomplicate things.”

“Why?”

“Because I’ve seen the way he looks at you.” He leaned in and pinned her in his gaze. “And the way you look at him.”

She scrunched her lips into a pout. “Everyone keeps warning me away from him.”

“Take it from me—sometimes you think you know something, but you’re wrong and just don’t know it.”

“I guess. I mean, he looks a certain way. He belongs to that biker club. He goes by that ridiculous name. But everything he does is... kind.”

“People will show you who they really are by their actions.”

Lyric hugged him again. “Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Confirming for me that my instincts about him aren’t wrong.”

“Then you should ask yourself, is there something there worth going after, or are you two so different that it would never work?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t really given it a chance.” She frowned. “Truthfully, I think I’ve really frustrated him by staying neutral.”

“Are you okay with that, or are you frustrated, too?”

Her face went all disgruntled. “I am. He’s always there, but he never comes out and says much of anything to me. He’s always saying things under his breath. I think he’s trying to tell me something, but I keep missing it. And it’s infuriating.” She glared at nothing.

“Then start paying attention. Catch him. You might discover exactly how he feels but can’t seem to say.”

One side of her mouth quirked back. “He’s hiding something.”

“Maybe he’s just waiting for you to be ready to know it.”

She frowned at him again. “When did you stop putting bugs in my hair and grow up?”

He chuckled. “It used to be fun to watch you squeal in disgust. Now I just want to see you happy.” He really meant that. He wanted everyone in his family to feel loved and accepted and joyful about their lives. Like he felt with Kenna.

She leaned her head on his shoulder. “I want that for you and Kenna, too. It’s sad what happened to her brother.”

“They were really close.” He looked around the long table and the room at all of his family, Cyn’s, and their closest friends. “He won’t be at our wedding. It will be a hole in her life, a yearning she can never fill because he’s gone. I hate that for her.”

“Me, too.”

His phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out and answered, even as he stood from the table and walked back to Hunt’s bedroom. “Hello.”

“Mr. Wilde. This is Kenna’s nurse, Tina.”
