A wave of sadness and anxiety washed over her, though she couldn’t reason out why the second overwhelmed her. Probably just the trauma of what happened the other night.

She’d never been more scared in her life.

Chase poked his head into the room. “It’s getting late,” he warned Max.

“He’s ready to go,” she answered, hoping Max didn’t back out now because she couldn’t hide the aftershock of fear that came over her.

The nurse called out from behind Chase, “Excuse me, but Kenna is due for another brain scan.”

“See,” she said brightly, “I have places to go, people to see, too.”

Max grumbled under his breath. “Maybe I should stay until the results come in.”

Kenna shook her head once, but stopped immediately because it sent the room spinning.

She tried not to show it, but Max put his hand to the side of her face. “Be still. Be quiet. Be calm.”

“I will. While you’re gone. And the nurse will call you and tell you my results.” She glanced at the nurse without moving her head.

The nurse nodded confirmation. “I’ll call as soon as they come in, though the doctor expects to see improvement, just like the last scan.”

“See. All is well.”

Max didn’t look convinced, but leaned down and kissed her softly. “I love you.”

“I love you.”

“I’ll be back soon.”

“I’ll be a little bit better then. And a little better tomorrow. And so on. But I’ll always be happiest when I’m with you.”

Max kissed her, his lips soft and sweet against hers.

The nurse sighed.

Chase waited patiently.

Max stood and gently set her hand on her thigh. He gave her one last longing-filled look, then left with Chase.

The nurse checked the monitors and took her blood pressure. “You’re really lucky. He loves you a lot. He’s barely been out of this room or away from your side. All the nurses have been sighing over him and how he takes care of you. Oh, the way he washed your face last night and brushed your hair. He makes sure you’re warm enough and holds your hand. It’s so sweet.”

“Max is the best man I know.”

“I’m sorry to hear about your brother. My condolences to you and your family. So much tragedy in one night. Your parents... They’ve been through a lot.”

“Thank you.” She appreciated the sympathy. She tried not to let her grief overwhelm her, but the tears came in a flood

Soon she’d find out how Kyle died and what else she didn’t know that everyone was keeping from her.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Max was in his tux and just about to escort his cousin Lyric down the aisle to stand up as Cyn’s bridesmaid. He was about to stand beside his brother Chase as co-best man when his phone finally rang. He didn’t even hesitate to answer it, needing to hear good news about Kenna, or he’d race back to the hospital to be with her.

The nurse confirmed what the doctor had anticipated. The swelling in her brain had decreased. No signs of infection after surgery. She was slowly getting better. Which meant he’d get to bring her home soon.

He couldn’t wait.

Even though she still faced some tough times ahead in her recovery and burying her brother.
