His smile widened. “She had pretty hair, like yours.” He brushed his hand over her head, avoiding the stitches at the back.

Kenna tried not to blush, but she did at the sweet compliment. She did the origami thing and came up with, “2 is a ‘Nope.’”

Max chuckled. “I guess you need to move it the other way to get the right fortune.”

She did and came up with, “3 gave us 9.”

“And it’s Fred for the win.”

“The white 8 is a ‘Nope’ but the 1 gives us 7.”

Max glanced at the lockbox. “So the four-digit combo is 1, 4, 9, 7.”

She rolled the numbers to the right digits and popped the lock. “We solved the mystery!” She couldn’t help getting caught up in the fun of it, because Max was into it with her.

“He could have just written down the lockbox code,” Max pointed out. “Or skipped the lockbox altogether and just sent whatever is inside.”

“What fun would that be? I’m guessing, wherever he is, he’s bored out of his mind if he’s doing this.”

“He obviously knows you’re here. Maybe he feels bad about what’s happened to you and just wanted to make you smile again. I’ve wanted that since the second I saw you in the hospital.”

She stared up at him. “I couldn’t believe you were actually there.”

“Hunt called and told me what happened. He knew I’d want to be there if you needed me.”

“It helped and hurt seeing you.”

“Same went for me every time I saw you around town. That’s why I tried so hard to avoid you.”

She popped the lock and stared at the slip of paper inside that read “Call Me” with a math equation written beneath it.

“Seriously?” Max grumbled. “I can’t even read that, let alone solve it. Why are there so many letters? They’re not evenxandy. Isn’t that usually how algebra works?”

“Exactly. Too many variables, not enough information to solve. So I’m guessing the equation itself is the answer.”

“How so?”

“Like the first code I solved, this is all letters and numbers again. You think it’s math, but maybe it’s a word or just a number.” She studied it again. “It’s either 10 digits or 10 letters.”

“A phone number,” they said in unison.

She studied the nonequation. 3((ax0)) + 6d+i–(6d+ 5f). She pulled out her phone and dialed as she changed the letters into the numbers they were in the alphabet. “I’m pretty sure it’s 307 649 6456.”

“Looks right to me. Go for it.”

She hit the Call button and waited for Kyle to pick up.

“Put it on Speaker,” Max coaxed.

She did, and her brother’s voice rang out. “Scooby Dooby Doo.”

She rolled her eyes. “Are you fucking kidding me right now? I’m locked in a room with Max, who has a gun by the way, because some whack job wants to kill me because of you!”

“There’s no threat, sis. I just paid a guy to drive by a couple times to distract your babysitters so we could talk.”

That made her angrier. “They’re armed federal agents.”

He ignored that. “So, you and Max, huh. Interesting that you ended up with him. I’m thinking Hunt had something to do with that.” Amusement filled his voice.
