Max turned his attention to Kenna. “You ready to go?”

She stood. “Yep. I’ve never cut down my own tree. We always got one from a lot in town. Since my place was so small, I could only get a little one. Still, it was cute and festive.”

“We’ll find a big one for the living room. We’llneed lots of room for presents now that the family is so big.”

His dad grinned. “Lana is too little to appreciate Christmas just yet, but I can’t wait to see Eliza opening her gifts.”

Max looked up at Kenna. “I can’t wait until it’s our little one doing the same.”

Kenna leaned down and kissed him softly, then looked him in the eye, her beautiful face a couple inches from his. “We’ll make it our New Year’s resolution to make a baby.”

He took her hand and held her in place. “Do you mean that?”

“Yes. We go after what we want from now on.”

He stood, took her in his arms, and kissed her again, so grateful and thankful that she wanted a family as much as he did. “I can’t wait.”

“I have an appointment to get my stitches removed just before the holiday and I’ll take care of getting ready to have a baby.” She meant to have her IUD removed. She’d asked for a couple months to let her body get back on track, but that still meant that sometime next year, if all went well, they’d be pregnant.

This was really going to happen.

He couldn’t be more excited.

Lucky for him, he already had plans to make her his wife.

Waiting now seemed hard, but also gave him a ton of enthusiasm and anticipation for what he had planned for the proposal.

“I’ll keep the baby stuff to myself,” his dad said, grinning.

Max hadn’t told anyone about his upcoming proposal.

Not yet anyway.

But everyone, including Kenna, knew it was coming.

In fact, Kenna probably suspected it would come on Christmas Day.

That was too obvious. He wanted her to be really surprised.

Chapter Thirty-Eight

Kenna stood in the living room staring at the beautiful Christmas tree all lit up and decorated, presents stacked and clustered underneath for everyone in the family. She loved the holidays, but this one felt even more special because the entire Wilde family and her parents would be here tomorrow to celebrate together.

Except one person would be missing. Kyle. She thought about him all the time. She missed him. But life went on, and she couldn’t be happier than to be here in her new home with Max.

“Hey, I thought you were going to go upstairs so I can fill your stocking.”

Because Max was busy on the ranch and she was still recuperating from her injuries, though she was much better now and looking forward to returning to her classroom after winter break, she’d put together all the goodies for the stockings, leaving hers the only one Max needed to fill.

She didn’t turn to him, but closed her eyes. “I won’t look. I promise.”

Max grumbled behind her, but she heard him move to the hearth and fill her stocking with whatever goodies he’d gotten her.

They were alone in the quiet room, nothing but the last embers of the fire crackling in the fireplace, the glow of the Christmas tree lights making the room feel warm and inviting.

Max’s hands settled on her shoulders. “You can open them now.”

She turned and spotted her stocking, fat to nearly bursting with gifts. “You’re sweet.”
