“Your mood have anything to do with Savina?” Solomon asked.

Hal jerked before checking to see where Nathan was. He was still at the far end of the barn, listening intently to the person on the other end of the phone.

“No, why?”

“Well, ain’t that some bullshit. Heather had coffee with Savina yesterday morning and said Savina looks just as mopey as you do. Did you two fight?”

“No,” Hal said. “We’re friends again.”

“Is that right?” Solomon said.

Hal nodded, looking away from his best friend’s steady gaze. Just because Hal had turned down both of Savina’s requests to have dinner this week didn’t mean they weren’t friends. It just meant he was swamped, that’s all.

He scrubbed a hand through his hair. He hadn’t seen Savina since Sunday afternoon when they’d finished helping Warren unpack the U-Haul at his condo. His temptation to go back home with Savina afterward, despite his aching muscles and exhaustion, had been tough to ignore. But Savina had made no indication earlier that morning at her place that she wanted him anymore. She’d already been up and showered by the time he dragged his tired ass out of her much too comfortable bed a full hour after he normally woke. She’d made him breakfast and been her usual, cheerful self, but she hadn’t touched or looked at him in any way that suggested she might want another go at his dick.

He nudged a rock with his foot, continuing to avoid Solomon’s razor sharp gaze. Savina had satisfied her itch for him, and he had to learn to be okay with that. He’d had two nights with her, one more night than he’d expected, and he needed to stop sulking like a big-ass baby.

But we didn’t even get to taste her pussy.

No, he hadn’t, and not going down on Savina once they’d gone to bed on Saturday night would forever be one of the biggest fucking regrets of his life.

“Hey, come back to me, asshole.” Solomon gave him a friendly poke in the shoulder. “What’s going on with you and Savina?”

“Nothing,” Hal said in a low voice as Nathan walked toward them. “Just drop it, Solomon.”

“That was Jade at the clinic,” Nathan said. “A dog came in that got tore up in a fight. I need to head back.”

“I can come back and assist,” Hal said.

Nathan shook his head, staring distractedly at his phone. “No, that’s okay. Jade said she could stay. But I told Savina Ras I would drop off the dewormer for the puppies on the way back to the clinic. Do you think you could drop it off for me?”

Hal plastered a smile on his face. “Sure, that’s no problem.”

“Great. I’ll grab the dewormer from my truck,” Nathan said.

“I’ll talk to you later,” Hal said to Solomon.

Solomon nodded. “We’re gonna talk soon, Hal. Real soon.”

His stomach knotted up tight, Hal followed Nathan out of the barn.

“Hal! Hi!”The happiness on Savina’s face when she opened the door made Hal feel good.

It made him feel like a fucking rockstar, if he was being honest.

“Hi,” he said.

“How are you?” Savina asked, then looked down at his motorcycle boots. “Shit, sorry, come inside. It’s freezing out today. Did you ride here?”

“I did.” He stepped inside the warm house, trying not to notice how fucking cute she looked with her hair up in a messy bun and wearing pink plaid pajama bottoms and an oversized sweatshirt with a peeling graphic of David Bowie on the front. Christ, he was almost certain she wasn’t wearing a bra.

“You must be freezing. Come to the kitchen, and I’ll get you some tea,” Savina said.

He hung his jacket on the coat tree and took off his boots before following Savina. He sat at the table, placing the bag with the dewormer on it, and she made them both tea before sliding into the seat next to his. “How was work today?”

“Good, thanks.” He pointed to the bag. “Here’s the dewormer for the puppies. Nathan had an emergency at the clinic and asked me to drop it off after we finished at Solomon’s.”
