"Asmodeus could not be detained as they soon discovered. When I caught wind of a possible attempt to raise my brother, I sent my sons to stop it, but before they could get into the church to stop my brother's uprising, a fire broke out and everyone inside perished. My sons never got inside but confirmed the charred bodies in the aftermath. The spell to raise Asmodeus wasn't fully executed...thankfully."

I sighed. "But my parents are still dead."

"I am sorry they dabble in such wickedness. He had to have known it was a death sentence."

My voice rose as I snapped, "He wouldn't have made that choice if he knew it would cost him his life."

"People are willing to make sacrifices every day for what they want," he replied, nonchalantly.

My jaw clenched, my teeth grinding together as I tried to contain my burning rage. An inferno of emotions built up within me, ready to explode but I held it in, the anger threatening to consume me from the inside out.

"You don't seem to have the same compassion, loyalty, and love for your brother as your sons do for theirs," I stated, shaking my head.

He chuckled ruefully. "My brother broke my trust even though I showed him nothing but unconditional love."

"How?"

"By fucking my wives," he stated.

I swallowed, but the lump rose anyway, nearly choking me. "Is this why you killed your sons' mothers?"

"Yes!" he hissed. "It had to be done. I tossed them all into a fire pit after they spelt with Asmodeus and transpired behind my back. They are all together now, probably fucking like beasts in hell. He can never get out!"

"You never told your sons what you did and why you did it."

"I never intended for them to discover my actions. Unfortunately, they stumbled upon the knowledge and chose to turn against me, instead of standing by me—their own father. I banished them from Shadow World because their minds were already poisoned against me. I cannot allow my own sons to kill me."

"You threatened to kill them if and when they broke exile, and then tried to send them to a hellish realm," I challenged.

"Yes, I know. And instead of them ending up where I originally planned, their Torstein fielded them away to another realm where I could not touch them with my magic or otherwise."

"So, you didn't want your sons to overthrow you and you don't want you brother raised because you desire total control..."

"And what I desire, I get..."

I blinked out in horror. Even now, Apollyn was still trying to lure me to side with him.

"I'm offering you a deal once again. Allow me back into Shadow World, and I will grant you access to magic and power beyond your wildest dreams. Power like I have. What do you say?" he offered.

"I say what I said last time...do you remember?" I shot him a menacing look, grabbed Loki, and in shadow language, quickly spoke the words necessary to return me to the correct timeline.

I ended up on the sidewalk of downtown in the middle of rush hour bustling traffic. I cursed out loud when Apollyn trailed me there, appearing just a few feet in front of me. No one would ever recognize him for what he was—a evil demon entity from another realm. He had already shifted into his easy-on-the-eyes human form. The sounds of honking cars, screeching brakes and the chaos of city life surrounded us. People passed by us, none the wiser. Cars coursed slowly along the busy intersections next to skyscrapers that were twenty stories high. Sounds drifted through the air: of people, traffic and construction.

I clutched I held Loki tighter to my chest, my mind in a state of shock and disbelief. I couldn't believe everything I had just learned.

My parents, the people I had loved and respected my whole life, had been trying to raise a demon to use as a weapon against their supernatural enemies. They perished after attempting and failing, and the police had covered up their deaths.

Apollyn looked deeply into her eyes, his soft words carrying a hint of desperation. "Do you understand why I seek you? I've never met anyone born outside our realm that can execute shadow magic like you. It's as if you were born to do it, and you are most certainly not afraid or timid about using it."

But I was too confused to say a word. My thoughts were a jumbled mess as I tried to process everything I had learned. Icould feel the anguish and curiosity building within me, but I couldn't allow myself to act on it.

I had to think of a way to get away from Apollyn, and that's when I remembered a magical spell taught to me by Altair. This spell would prevent Apollyn from following me again. If we kept up this cat-mouse game, I knew fully well that he'd used his cunning to trail his way right back into Shadow World with me if he could. With a soft murmured incantation, I felt the familiar sensation of magic running through my body, and everything faded to black.

Chapter 20

Sadie

Iknew it was urgent to bring back the news to Altair, Morpheus, and Dominik about what their father was up to. I needed to tell my men about what Apollyn revealed to me.
