"What in the devil's name?" Nostro immediately slammed down his glass and burst through the doors of the dining hall.

I probably should have stayed behind. Made my exit right then and there. But no...I was too damn curious for my own good.

I followed Nostro, peeking out the door down the hallway. What I saw shocked me.

Demons where fighting the vampires. Not just any demons. Shadow demons. Their eyes glowed with an otherworldly fury. I let out a scream of my own, the sound barely escaping my throat.

"We're under attack," Nostro yelled.

The vampires lunged forward with savage aggression, their fangs glinting in the moonlight. They tore into the demons with preternatural power, their blades whistling as they spun around to devastating effect. Blood sprayed in all directions as vampires were hacked and beheaded by the relentless shadow demons. The demons were incinerated with each swing of a sword, leaving nothing but a pile of ashes.

"Master, what are they after? Why are they here?" one of the coven members shouted as they fought off a demon.

Nostro, with stark blue eyes, turned and cast his steely gaze on me in that moment. I froze in hall when I realized he suspected that I had something to do with this.

My mind raced. I hadn't done this. I didn't bring this darkness into the world. But if not me, then who? These were shadow demons, something only the most powerful could lead. Who had access to these shadow demons? I racked my brain for answers. Who had unleashed this hellish army on the unsuspecting vampires?

I watched in horror as the battle raged on. I stood out in the center of it all, but realized that none of the shadow demons were attacking me.

Just as I thought it was over and the coven had won, another group of demons appeared out of nowhere. They were relentless, and it seemed like there was no end to their numbers.

Nostro swiped down his sword and a demon burst into flames then fell to the floor with ashes. He raised his sword and with teeth bared he hissed at me. "You did this. You're next, witch. I’m going to drink you until you feel my wrath.”

I took a trembling breath, my heart racing in my chest as I attempted to flee for safety. But before I could take my first step, a demonic figure materialized out of the shadows, blocking the entrance. Its eyes burned with malice intent and I was seized by a paralyzing fear, unable to move or even breathe.

The demons surrounded me, their flaming eyes leering down at me. At first I thought the fighting shadows here could do nothing but take me, but apparently some of the demons could take actual physical form.

Their claws were like iron as they grabbed me and lifted me off the ground. I kicked and screamed, but they just laughed. I felt my skin being pierced by their claws as they pressed me into the cold stone floor.

"Noooo." I yelped in pain as a searing heat burned my back, and I knew they had marked me with some sort of magical symbol.

The pain was too much and I felt my vision fading as the darkness closed in around me. I passed out from the pain.

Chapter 13

Sadie

Ibolted upright, my head pounding and my back screaming in pain. Through bleary eyes, I surveyed the wreckage of the foyer; tables, chairs, and broken glass littered the floor. I choked back a scream as I saw the corpses of vampires and piles of demonic ash scattered throughout the room.

I felt a stir of movement around me, a series of hushed conversations in the dark. The vampires moved in swift silence, dragging the limp bodies of their fallen comrades across the floor and swept up the ashes of the demon aggressors.

Before I could even sit up, heavy boots thudded on the ground and a tall figure stood between me and the door. It was Nostro, eyes blazing with a tireless hunger, and I realized my escape was already sealed.

The master vampire was standing over me, his expression unreadable. A pale light twinkled in his eyes as he watched me, and his lips were drawn in a tight line over his gleaming fangs. His hands were curled into fists at his sides.

"You're awake," he said, his voice cold and hard.

"What happened? Are they gone?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"The demons have been dealt with," the master vampire said curtly. "But at a great cost." He gestured around the room, indicating the fallen members of his coven.

I struggled to sit up, the pain in my back making it difficult to move. "Why did they attack? What did they want?" Putting aside the agony, I stood up and flinched as a sharp tingle raced up my back.

“You brought these evils to our place of peace,” he said, his voice gruff and heavy with disbelief.

I was stunned, yet part of me couldn't help but ponder if I had inadvertently stirred the shadow demons from the realm. No, I must be mistaken. It would've taken a lot more than the thought of being hopelessly lost to stir up demon forces to attack.

Another vampire walked up and tapped Nostro on the shoulder.
