I followed them into the mansion, questions buzzing through my head with each step closer to Nostro's chambers. As we walked through dimly lit halls lined with tapestries and decorations from centuries past, I could feel their wary eyesupon me, accessing me, and perhaps even evaluating how strong of a witch I was.

Finally we reached his chambers where an old oaken door served as entranceway - even though it looked deceptively unassuming at first sight when opened up it revealed oddly magnificent furnishings within this large hall-fitting of a Vampire Lord. Golden candelabras graced either side of the walls while dozens of cobweb covered chandeliers.

The vampires gestured for me to stand in the middle of the room.

"It's time for you to meet Nostro," one of them hissed.

Another one snarled, "He's going to have a special surprise for you."

"B-but...he doesn't know me. Yet." My heart thudded as I spun in circles, scanning for what would happen when powerful vampire Nostro left his chamber.

The vampire's deep laugh echoed throughout the room. "In due time, he will."

The vampires circled me like vultures, their piercing eyes filled with a bloodthirsty hunger. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I frantically searched for an escape, just in case I would need one.

My heart raced and my mind raced as a woman broke away from the crowd at the opposite end of the square. Her steps accelerating with each stride, I could make out her features as she got closer. A series of intricate runes were tattooed on her face, the fiery glow beneath the oil-black ink job making it clear that this woman was more than human.

I jolted back, my heart pounding wildly. I could feel my magic swelling within me, a rising tide of power that seemed to know something was amiss. Anxiety coursed through my veins as the energy bubbled and boiled, itching to burst forth until I was ready to explode.

Then I saw it. A hint of magic in the woman's eyes.

A witch! This woman was a witch.

She lifted a hand palm up, pursed her lips and blew outward. A gust of foul-smelling smoke hit me in the face. I choked and fell to my knees. Blackness closed around me. And then I was lying on the floor looking up at the witch. This was a witch. My mind worked sluggishly, trying to figure out what had just happened.

The witch smiled a wicked smile as she gazed down at me. Before I could retaliate with a spell of my own, I blacked out.

I wokeup over and over again in a room with drab, stone gray walls. Somehow I couldn't call my magic and I realized that the room must've been laced with wards to repress my powers. If these vampires had a witch ally, I knew magically blocking me was possible.

As the hours ticked by, I began to realize that no one was coming for me. I had been so careful not to leave any trace of my whereabouts except with Loki the cat, thinking that I was being clever by venturing out on my own. But now, I realized that my independence had led me straight into danger.

No one knew where I was. No one knew that I had been taken by vampires. I was completely alone, at their mercy.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I sat in the cold, damp cell, feeling helpless and hopeless. I had always prided myself on my strength and my abilities as a witch, but now I was nothing more than a prisoner. Just like my men. I couldn't help myself or them if I was stuck here trying to find out what happened to my sister.

I tried to come up with a plan, some way to escape or at least send a message for help to Shadow World, but my mind was racing too fast. I couldn't think straight.

Unleashing shadow demons onto Earth to get one's way was something a villain would do. I wasn't a villain. Was I?

As the night wore on, I couldn't help but fear for my life. Would I be drained of my blood and left for dead? Or worse, turned into a vampire myself? The thought made me shudder.

All I wanted to do was speak to Nostro. After I found out what he knew about my sister's whereabouts, he could do anything he wanted to do to me.

I wason the brink of slumber when the heavy thud of footsteps echoed down the corridor. I jolted upright, my chest heaving with each breath, my mind whirling with panic as I questioned who could be approaching my cell in the dead of night.

A moment later, the door to my cell swung open, and a tall, handsome man stepped into the room. He had dark hair and piercing blue eyes, and he wore all black. I knew instantly that he was the master vampire—Nostro.

Chapter 11

Sadie

"Who are you and what are you doing in our territory?" Nostro demanded, his voice raw and deep.

I swallowed hard, trying to steady my nerves. My words were on the tip of my tongue, but I couldn't find them. I knew this vampire could drain me dry and snap my neck within seconds...or worse, deliver a bite to turn me into one of his kind.

Nostro smiled. "Your mind is blocked to me, mistress of magic."

"Do not call me a mistress," I blurted. I'd heard him call Aunt Naima that when I saw the memory.
