“Brooke knows it now too.”

Zac slowly looked me up and down, then said, “Since we still have plenty of time before we go to Brooke’s, I would like for you and me to do something. I think it would help you with how you’re feeling.”

“Yeah, you fucking me would probably help me a lot.”

Zac smiled that big, dimpled smile of his that I loved so much. “That’s actually my backup plan,” he chuckled.

“What’s your first plan then?”

After setting down his cup of coffee on the table and standing up, Zac motioned for me to come over to him. So I did.

“What now?” I went on to ask, staring up into his sparkling sky-blue eyes.

He was still smiling and before I knew it, he’d picked me up and thrown me over his shoulder and he was running toward the swimming pool. There wasn’t enough time for me to break free from him before we both plunged down into the deep end—me only wearing my robe and Zac only wearing his sports briefs.

He hugged me to him while we were beneath the surface of the water. He was right: being in the water did help with all the anxiety that I was feeling about going to talk with Brooke. Zac hugging me helped too, but it was when he kissed me again, underwater, that I felt all the anxiety leave my body and peace take its place.

As Zac and I walked into my garage, we looked over at each other. The one thing that we hadn’t talked about this morning was whether we were driving one or two vehicles over to Brooke’s house.

“As much as I’d love to ride together, it’s not wise,” I said.

“No, it’s not.”

“Maybe on some other occasion. To somewhere else. I don’t know what kind of occasion that would ever be, but maybe that door will open for us one day.”

Zac stared at me, then leaned closer and kissed me. “Follow me to Brooke’s, babe.”

“Babe?”

“Um, yeah. That just came out and I don’t know why. I’ve never called anyone that.”

“I’ve never been called that…but I like it. It’s a term of endearment.”

Zac grinned. “You are my babe.”

“And you’re mine.”

“I sure am.”

Zac kissed me again. Then we got into our individual vehicles and headed to Brooke’s.

As we were pulling into her driveway, I was happy to see that it was a long one. It curved around to the back of Brooke’s house, and that’s where Zac and I parked—where no one could see our cars. We were walking toward Brooke’s back door when she opened it and then walked down the steps with the biggest smile on her face.

“Good morning, Joan of Arc and Buchanan!”

“Good morning,” he and I said at the same time.

Zac hugged Brooke then she hugged me.

“Ian has already gone home, so it’s just us and that’s what I wanted. Are you two hungry?”

Zac and I both said, “Starving.”

“Are you in the mood for a mimosa or three?”

“Absolutely,” we said, also at the same time. I looked over at Zac and he already had his eyes on me. The corners of his mouth were also curled up. Our in-sync timing was humorous. Brooke apparently thought so too because she started laughing.

“Come on,” she said. “Let’s get this Sunday party started.”
