“I figured you get asked that a lot and probably get annoyed by it.”

“Not at all. I’m honored to be named after my dadandStevie Nicks.”

Bash sat back in his chair and sighed. “Just so you know—I’m that witchy woman’s biggest fan. Every time she tours with Fleetwood Mac or alone, I go see her.”

“My mom and dad actually saw her during Fleetwood Mac’s ‘The Dance’ tour in 1997—on Halloween night of all nights.”

“Oh, I love that!”

“Then you’ll also love this: I have my mom’s concert t-shirt.”

“Shut up!” Bash huffed out, acting jealous. It made all of us start laughing.

“I’ll show it to you some time.”

“Seriously?”

“Seriously.”

“I just wanna hold it in my hands and smell it.”

“No prob. You better give it back to me, though,” Stevie said, raising an eyebrow at Bash.

“Maybe,” he teased.

“Maybe’s ass.”

We all started laughing again. Then our waitress walked up and asked if everyone was ready for another round of drinks. We were, and as soon as she went to have our order filled, a song came on, but it was a slow one this time. I looked over at Stevie and she already had her eyes on me.

“You know this song too, don’t you?” I asked her.

“Yes. It’s another really good one.”

“And my man and I are about to go dance to it,” Brooke added. “I can handle this pace.”

I grinned at her and Ian, then watched them along with the others who had a spouse/significant other with them start getting up from our table to go slow dance. It was just going to be Stevie, Bash and I left sitting here.

As soon as Brooke made it around the table, she walked up to me, leaned down, and whispered in my ear, “All your friends here tonight will think nothing of you dancing with Stevie one time, so go get her. I know you want to. I also know you’re romantically involved with her and I’m okay with it. I understand. Now go make a memory with my Joan of Arc while you can.”

Although I had already sensed that Brooke was aware of my affair with Stevie, it still shocked me to hear her affirm it. It also shocked me to hear her say that she was okay with it. I knew she was going to talk to me about it some more at a later time and I was actually looking forward to having that conversation with her because I wanted her to know everything about Stevie and me. I wanted to tell her about how innocently we began, how we fell in love, and also that we were committed to riding this thing out until a door opened for us to be together like a normal couple. I planned on telling Brooke that I would’ve already married her Joan of Arc if I could.

When she stood back up, she smiled at me and I thanked her. Like a mother, Brooke patted my face, and then she and Ian took off for the dance floor. As soon as they were gone, I looked across the table at Stevie. She was staring straight at me.

“What was that about?” she asked.

“Brooke knows about us.”

“Oh shit!”

“Yes, oh shit!” Bash added.

I waved off their concern. “No, she’s okay with it. She said she understands.”

“How does she know about us?” Stevie asked.

“I don’t know, but she told me to go dance with you. If it’s just one time, no one will think anything of it. So would you please do me the honor of dancing with me?”

Stevie took a deep breath, nodded yes, and then we both got up from the table.
