Brooke started chuckling. “I can tell you’re better because your face isn’t beet-red anymore.”

“No, it’s not. I accepted that this is just how things are gonna be for now.”

“Well, one benefit of it is having Buchanan protecting you.”

I looked over at him and he was still grinning at me.

“That’s the best benefit.”

“I’ll let you two be,” Brooke said, looking back and forth at us. “And I’ll see you tomorrow, Joan of Arc.”

“Okay. And Brooke?”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you. For everything.”

“You’re welcome.”

After she closed my office door behind her, Zac walked around my desk, then pulled me up from my chair by my hands. Without hesitation, he wrapped his arms around me and I melted into him, resting my head on his shoulder.

“I’m so happy to see you and hold you again,” he whispered, then softly kissed my forehead.

“Same here. I love you.”

“I love you too. Everything is gonna be all right.”

“I know it is.”

“Are you about ready to leave? No rush. Just wondering.”

I raised my head and looked up at Zac. His blue eyes were sparkling. “Yeah. I’ve just gotta grab my purse and briefcase is all.”

“One more question. Do you know how to shoot a gun?”

“Yes. Graham is a deer hunter and used to take me hunting with him. I’ve done lots of target practice.”

“Do you own a gun?”

“No.”

“I didn’t think so. I have one that I wanna give to you. It’s in my car.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I’m going to do that and you’re going to take it.”

“But Zac…”

Before I could say another word, he pressed his warm lips against mine and held them there. I closed my eyes and just breathed him in. When he pulled away and looked at me again, I nodded because I already knew what was on the tip of his tongue.

“I know. It’s non-negotiable,” I said.

He smiled that big, dimpled smile of his. Then I grabbed my purse and briefcase, and he escorted me to my car. We both looked around on our way to the parking lot and nothing unusual stood out. We didn’t see any strange people lurking anywhere.

After I got into my car, Zac stepped over to his. It was parked next to mine and when he came back over to me, he handed me a gun case. I opened it to see a sleek black Glock. I didn’t know which model it was but what I did know was what this brand of gun was capable of doing because Graham had owned three of them.

“Do you know how to shoot it?” Zac asked.
