“Justin Edwards.”

“Is he from Lubbock?”

“Yes, and he still lives there. He’s the reason why Avery goes to west Texas so often and stays gone like she does. It’s not just to see her family and friends as she’s always claimed.”

“What kind of photos and videos do you have of her and Justin?”

“Them holding hands, hugging and kissing in public, and also her leaving his house early in the morning after spending the night with him.”

“That doesn’t prove they’ve slept together.”

“Well, I have evidence of that too.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yes. The private investigator I hired is really good at what he does. Listen, I’m covering all the bases should Avery ever decideto take me to court. I don’t know if the evidence that I have on her would amount to much in a judge’s eyes, but I have to have something.”

“You already have so much, Zac.”

“But I still don’t think it’s enough. Not for the courts to strip Avery of her mother’s rights to Malcolm.”

“You’re both in a catch-22.”

“You’re right. We are.”

“How did it make you feel when you found out about Avery’s involvement with Justin?”

“I didn’t get angry if that’s what you mean.”

“It is.”

“I just felt indifferent and still do, because I don’t care about their affair. The evidence that I have simply affirmed what I’d been suspecting for some time.”

“Do you know where Avery is at the moment?”

“No, but I left her outside in the swimming pool before I came into my bedroom and texted you.”

“You went swimming with her?”

“Hell no. She asked me to, but there was no way that I was getting into the water with her. She tried to lure me in by taking off all her clothes.”

“Wow.”

“Another wow, huh?”

“She just boggles my mind. She left you and Malcolm like she did a week and a half ago, you have proof that she’s having an affair with Justin, then she suddenly comes back home and tells you that she wants to work out things with you. Avery obviously wanted you to fuck her too or she wouldn’t have taken off her clothes. To me, it sounds like something happened between her and Justin.”

“I thought the same thing but then again, Avery likes to try buttering me up so that my financing of her lifestyle doesn’t stop.”

“How do you know that’s her motive?”

“I overheard her talking on the phone about it with her sister before. That’s how. What she doesn’t realize is that I wouldn’t stop the money flow if she didn’t try buttering me up. Keeping it going equates to peace. Well, it does most of the time.”

“Going to the grocery store with Avery must equate to peace too,” Stevie said.

“It did. She wanted homemade tacos for dinner.”

“I sound jealous, don’t I?”
