“I have.”

“Where did you meet her?”

“I saw her on the running trail first. We didn’t speak to each other, but then a week later we did, at Mystic Bar. She was there with Brooke and her team. She’s part of that team now.”

“She’s an assistant D.A.?”

“Yes. She handles all the C.P.S. cases.”

“Holy shit, son.”

“I know.”

My mom shook her head back and forth like she couldn’t believe all that I’d just told her, but then she smiled. “What I’mabout to say may be wrong in every way, but I’m really happy for you. You deserve to have a little sunshine in your life.”

“She’s a lot of sunshine, Mom.”

“So are you two really seeing each other? Or are you just friends?”

I grinned and looked down. Then my mom put her hand under my chin and made me look at her.

“We’re really seeing each other,” I said.

“Romantically? Like you’ve kissed her andeverything?”

“Yes.”

“Okay. Does she know you’re married?”

“Yes.”

“Does she know the circumstances of your marriage?”

“She knows everything about me.”

“Please don’t tell me that she’s in the same kind of sad situation that you are.”

“She was but she’s divorced now.”

“Does she have any children?”

“She lost her only child to SIDS four years ago. His name was Malcolm.”

My mom’s mouth fell open. Then she leaned back on her barstool and blew out a heavy breath. “I cannot imagine losing you, Zac. And I don’t know what to think about her little boy’s name being the same as your little boy’s. Nothing other thanwow.”

“I was blown away too when I found out.”

“How old is your sunshine-woman?”

“She’s thirty.”

“Seven years difference between you and her.”

“It’s just a number.”

“You’re right. It is.” My mom looked over my face again. “What’s her name?”

“Stevie.”
