“What are you doing here, Tom?” I repeated my question.

“I… I… who’s this?” he asked, jerking his head in Jack’s direction.

“None of your damn business. Now, I’ve already asked you twice. What do you want from me?”

Tom had the audacity to look shocked by what he was seeing. He found me at my cabin—something else I needed an explanation on—and I had a man here with me. It probably wasn’t hard to figure out what our relationship was, considering both of us were half-naked.

“I wanted to talk to you,” Tom finally answered.

Crossing my arms over my chest, I urged, “So, talk.”

His eyes drifted to Jack once more, then returned to me. “I was hoping to speak to you alone.”

“That’s not going to happen,” Jack declared, interjecting his opinion for the first time since it became clear who the man at the door was.

Holy crap.

Like it was nothing for him to do, Jack jumped right in and took control. He’d been standing beside me as I communicated with Tom, but the moment it was heading somewhere he didn’t like—a place he knew I wouldn’t like—he stepped in.

I loved him even more for doing that for me, for proving precisely why it was him that was in my life now, and why it was Tom that was standing on the other side of the door.

“Excuse me?” Tom retorted.

“That’s not going to happen,” Jack repeated. “You’ve got something to say to Dakota, you do it here and now. Otherwise, you don’t speak to her at all.”

Tom ignored Jack and returned his attention to me. “Seriously? You can’t even give your husband five minutes to talk?”

“Ex-husband,” I corrected him.

Tom sighed.

I was irritated. Part of that was simply because Tom was here to begin with, but the bigger reason was that he’d interrupted what Jack and I had been doing in the kitchen. I was a woman whose man had just indicated he wanted to eat me for breakfast, and we’d been well on our way to getting to that place. Instead of Jack being able to have the appetizer he wanted before his meal this morning, he was standing here listening to my stupid ex-husband.

“The time to talk is now,” Jack urged.

Clearly, he was just as frustrated as I was.

Continuing to ignore Jack, Tom kept his focus on me. “I wanted to come and ask you to join me for dinner. We need to talk.”

“I already told you that wasn’t happening for five minutes here,” Jack told him. “You certainly aren’t taking Dakota out for dinner.”

“You aren’t a factor in this conversation. This is up to Dakota,” Tom said. “It’s none of your business.”

“Considering it’s my tee she’s wearing right now, and it was my cock she was riding this morning, I’m going to say it absolutely is my business.”

I worked extremely hard not to allow my mouth to drop open at Jack’s words. It was even harder not to laugh in Tom’s face about it, too. As much as I didn’t need Tom knowing anything about what Jack and I did with one another in the bedroom, I had to admit that I liked the way Jack put it to him. This also felt like the sweetest revenge.

Tom’s eyes narrowed on Jack briefly. When he returned his attention to me again, he asked, “Is this what you want? A guy who looks and talks like this?”

“Yes, Tom, I do. How did you even find me?”

“I hired a private investigator, because you wouldn’t listen to me when I called you,” he replied.

“And you actually believed it would be better to show up unannounced after I made it clear in all the ways possible that I had no interest in discussing anything with you?” I retorted.

“I miss you, Dakota,” he said, his voice dipping low. “We need to talk and work this out.”

He couldn’t be serious.
