“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I barely had enough energy to make it from the bed to the bathroom as it is,” I explained. “Going anywhere else wasn’t an option. I was hoping you’d be able to make me a cup of tea now that you’re home.”

Tom blinked his eyes rapidly. “You want tea?” he questioned me.

I closed my eyes, attempted to breathe in through my clogged nose, and begged, “Please. My throat is killing me, and I’m freezing.”

“So, you have a fever?”

“Yes.”

He sighed, and I realized I must have been slightly delirious, because it sounded like he was frustrated that I needed him to do something for me. Or maybe he was annoyed that I was sick at all.

But that couldn’t be the case. I mean, he couldn’t have thought I was enjoying this, could he?

I closed my eyes again after Tom walked out and rolled to my side. All I wanted to do was sleep, fix my throat, and be warm.

I must have dozed off for a few minutes, because the next thing I knew, Tom was standing just inside the room when he called out my name and woke me.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” I murmured. “I’m so exhausted, I just fell asleep.”

“Your tea is on the nightstand,” he said. “Is there anything made for dinner?”

Shooting him a dubious look, I answered, “You’re lucky I could make it to the bathroom to vomit earlier today.”

“Eww, Dakota, that’s fucking disgusting.”

“I’m sick, Tom. I’m pretty sure I have the flu. Do you honestly think I slaved over a hot stove today?”

Tom let out another frustrated sigh and said, “I guess I’ll go figure something out.”

“Okay.”

“And I’m going to sleep in the guest bedroom until you get over whatever this is,” he added.

My eyes, which had started to drift shut again, shot open. “Are you serious?”

He nodded. “My parents’ anniversary party is this weekend.”

“That’s three days away,” I reminded him. “I’m sure I’ll be fine by then.”

“Yeah, well, I’m not going to take any chances,” he replied. “I don’t want to risk getting sick and missing it.”

Obviously, I wasn’t an evil person. I didn’t want my husband getting sick or being unable to attend his parents’ anniversary party, even if I’d noticed how uncomfortable they’d started making things for me ever since he and I had gotten married.

But I’d have been lying if I said it didn’t hurt to know that he refused to sleep by my side at night. Hell, he was talking to me from across the room right now, and judging by the on his face and the way he was acting, it was clear he still didn’t believe he was far enough away.

Come to think of it, I was surprised he even brought the tea over to the nightstand.

Suddenly, my body started trembling again, and the worst part about it happening was that I didn’t know if it was the result of my fever coming back with a vengeance, or if I was just that upset.

No matter that it was completely visible to Tom, he didn’t do anything about it. He didn’t even offer to get me anything. Sadly, it seemed as though he wasn’t the least bit concerned with taking care of me, keeping me company, or giving me a hug.

I had been crazy to think that I’d have gotten that from him.

But what was even worse than all of that was what happened three days later. It was the night of Tom’s parents’ anniversary party, and he refused to allow me to go with him.
