I sat next to her on the bench and gently pulled her head back and up against the wall to stem the bleeding.

“Feel better?” I asked.

“No,” she muttered.

“Me neither,” I said and rubbed my jaw. That girl definitely packed a punch.

“What the hell happened in here?” asked a guard, walking into the room.

“Nothing,” both me and the woman said in unison.

The guard looked down at the woman on the floor, but she hugged her knees and looked away.

He shook his head. “Stevens, come with me.”

I panicked for a minute. I hadn’t thrown the first punch, but maybe the rules in here were different. I kept my mouth closed, not saying anything until I knew what was going on.

He led me to a small room. There were no windows, but I spotted a camera in the corner. Only a narrow table and two chairs were inside the space.

“Wait here,” he said and left me alone. I crossed my arms and pushed my back up against the wall.

I wasn’t sure how much time had passed, but my legs were getting tired. It must have been the middle of the night by now.

I pulled out the plastic chair and sat down. Resting my head on my arms, I shut my eyes.

Visions of me and Ryan together materialized behind my eyes. I recalled the first time he’d come to the bar, and how he wouldn’t give up until he got my number. I smiled when I remembered the auction. The first time I felt his mouth on mine.

I licked my lips and felt butterflies in my stomach, remembering our last time together. On his desk. On my back. Ryan on top of me…

“Laura,” he said.

I swear his voice was so clear in my mind. Almost as though he were next to me.

“Laura.”

Mmm, I groaned. My body reacted to the sound of his voice calling my name.

“Laura, are you asleep?”

What?!

I snapped my head up and standing in front of me, wearing black pants and a gray sweater, was Ryan. His arms were crossed, but when he saw my face he reached for me.

His thumb caressed my jaw and I flinched. The tender flesh must have bruised already.

“Did you fall?”

I shook my head.

“Did someone hit you?” His voice sounded angry. I’d never heard him angry like this before.

I shrugged. “You should see the other girl.”

He pulled out a chair and sat down in front of me. “You hit her?”

I crossed my arms and looked him in the eye. “Only after she hit me,” I said.

He shook his head. “I can’t believe you’d do something like that.”
