I pushed away from the desk. I would talk to her about it. I would ask her about her past and wait for her to tell me the truth. I had five days until Friday. Plenty of time to ask her a simple question.

I dropped my head in my hands.

Then why did it feel so hard?

There were more people than I’d expected at the bar on a Monday night. I spotted Laura right away. She wore a white sweater with a low V-neck. The necklace would look perfect with that outfit.

I didn’t bring the necklace with me tonight. I planned to give it to her on Friday, to butter her up before meeting my pain-in-the-ass brothers.

I was supposed to bring up the past last night, but everything was going so well and it didn’t seem natural to the conversation, but I was determined I would casually find a way tonight.

She strutted to my table and I enjoyed the view of her tight blue jeans and high boots as she swayed her hips from side to side.

The things this woman made me want to do to her. Over and over again.

“Hello, beautiful,” I said when she approached.

Her eyes crinkled as she placed a hand on her hip.

“What can I get for you, Mr. Crawford?” She bent forward while staring at me the entire time. I’d seen other servers try this move, but my dick never twitched as it did just now.

“You can get that pretty little ass on my lap,” I said, and patted my thigh.

She smiled and stepped between my legs. “I’ll have to take a raincheck on that offer, as tempting as it is.”

My hand involuntarily stretched out to cusp her hip. I squeezed and watched her chest rise in excitement. This undeniable chemistry between us was exhilarating. No matter how many times I had this woman, my body wanted more.

“Stay awhile,” I said.

She looked behind her at a small crowd forming at the bar. “I can’t. It’s just me and Sam tonight.”

“Fine. But you’re coming home with me later. I need you.”

She nodded and bent down to kiss me before returning to the bar. A few minutes later, she came back with a scotch neat, despite me not having ordered one.

As I sipped my drink, I realized I didn’t care about her past. What could possibly be there that would make me think less of her? She worked hard, was studying to graduate from college, and lived with her dad. I was probably making this worse by delaying the search and getting it over with.

I spotted a man in a gray suit at the entrance and knew my next meeting was here. I would let this go and concentrate on the present.

My meeting dragged on. The other lawyer kept talking about loopholes that I didn’t care about. He left about an hour later, so I spent the rest of the evening watching Laura work. Watching her body move effortlessly from one end of the bar to the other. It was like watching a ballet, only a hell of a lot sexier.

When it was finally closing time, Laura ran into my open arms and I drove us back to my place.

I had barely opened the front door when she started loosening my tie. My heart thudded against my chest as her hand caressed it. Her fingers eagerly worked at my buttons and I inhaled sharply to calm my adrenaline.

Take it slowly, Ryan. Don’t rush.

I repeated this mantra as she undressed me. She threw my shirt onto the hallway floor, my tie next to the entrance door, and was currently unbuttoning my pants.

There was no denying the connection between us. At times it felt so intense that my heart would stop if she did.

I had to get her upstairs now or risk taking her on this damn staircase.

Sweeping my arms underneath her, I carried her up the stairs. She wrapped her arms around my neck and kissed my chest, circling her tongue around my nipple.

Christ!
