Her chest rose up and down as she stared at me. Was she excited? Nervousness? Was it from anticipation? I was trying to give her some time to back out without saying the words. I wanted this woman but I just couldn’t read her. I wanted to get to know her better and I wanted to see her naked, so this seemed like the perfect suggestion. I just hope I didn’t scare her off.

But something told me that Laura didn’t scare too easily. I was betting she was as strong as the wall she had built.

She placed both elbows on the table and raised her eyebrow. “What are you waiting for?”

This woman took no prisoners. God, she was incredible.

“Why don’t we take this to the living room, where I can start a fire and we can be more comfortable?” And you will be warm when I get you naked.

“Perfect,” she said, and rose from the table.

The dress was tailored to every curve of her body, but my imagination wanted to know exactly what was underneath it.

When I reached the living room, I switched on the electric fireplace, and the flames sparked to life. The gems at the bottom danced but didn’t crackle and I realized the house was too quiet. Opening my phone, I chose a playlist I’d designed for romance. Smooth, seductive vocals, a little saxophone, and a lot of piano solos.

Offering her my hand, she stared at it and narrowed her eyes.

“Dance with me,” I said.

She shook her head. “I don’t dance.”

“Sure, you do. Everyone does. There’s no one here to watch and judge you.”

“I’m not worried about what people think. I just prefer not to.” She shrugged her shoulders and tossed back her hair.

I bet there was a story behind this, but it wasn’t my turn to ask questions yet.

“Okay,” I said, sitting on the large couch next to her, spreading my arms across the back of the soft furniture, but my fingertips brushed her shoulders. “As you insisted, I’ll go first. I choose ‘truth’.”

She turned toward me on the couch and crossed her legs. The fabric fell from her knees. Then she searched my face. “What are your life goals?”

I chuckled. “This feels like an interview.”

I wasn’t short on goals. I had a checklist of them. But which ones to share with her? “Um, well, I want Crawford Corporation to increase its wealth and become one of the largest real estate companies in the state. I want to win Sam’s case before the end of the month, which is looking very promising, by the way,” I said.

Her eyes lit up at the mention of her friend’s name. “I didn’t want to bring it up, attorney-client privilege and all, but I’m glad you said that.”

I nodded and gave her a minute before I continued. “And my most pressing and urgent goal,” I said, leaning toward her, “is to get this gorgeous woman naked and thrashing underneath me before the night is over.”

She swallowed and my eyes flew to the soft skin of her neck. Her pulse fluttered just below her delicate jaw.

“Now your turn,” I said. “Truth or dare?”

“Dare,” she said, without hesitation.

Thwarted from asking her about dancing, I searched my brain for something to test her on.

“I dare you to list ten teams in the NFL.” It was a risk but she didn’t seem like the Sunday night football kind of girl.

She rolled her eyes. “The Giants, the Bills, the Patriots, the Packers—”

“And their city.”

“You can’t add in the middle of a dare.”

“Fine.”

“The Eagles, the Lions…” She bit her lip and I held my breath.
