“I think he will. I have a good feeling about him.”

“I thought you hated guys like him.”

“What do you mean, guys like him?” she asked, taking a sip of her drink.

“You know, the kind of men that have the world at their fingertips and expect everyone else to do whatever they want.”

“What makes you think he’s like that?”

“He… well, he… looks like the type. Fancy clothes, fancy car, fancy watch. Perfect hair. What else do I have to say?”

Sam smiled into her glass. “So, you noticed those things, did you?”

I rolled my eyes. “Of course, I did. How could I not?”

Pointing a finger at me, she said, “I’m disappointed in you, Laura.”

“Really? I have eyes, Sam. Just because I don’t date men like that doesn’t mean I don’t see them. I choose not to date them.”

“No, I’m disappointed that you’re judging someone solely on the way they look and how much money they make. That’s reverse prejudice.”

I closed my eyes and shook my head. Was Sam being serious? “You know that’s not a thing, right?”

“Well, you’re being judgy. Is that better?”

“Not really,” I mumbled. “Look, I know you’re grateful because he bailed you out, but it’s no sweat off his back.”

“Right. It wouldn’t change his life if I stayed locked up or not, but he bailed me out. He did it because he asked me questions about myself and got to know me. And I got to know him. He’s not a bad guy.”

She sipped her drink and smirked over the rim of her glass. “I don’t know. Maybe when this is all over, I just may ask him out. Do you think he’ll say yes?”

My fist tightened around the bottle of vodka. I responded casually, “I think that’s a bad idea.”

“Why?” Her smile confused me.

“Because you know nothing about him. People don’t show you who they really are, Sam. Especially powerful men like him.”

“I think you don’t want me to ask him out because you like him.”

“Ha! I don’t.”

She looked around the room. “Do you think he’ll show up tonight?”

“He hasn’t been back all week. I don’t think he’ll come tonight.”

“Why do you look sad about it?”

I sighed, clueing in to Sam’s game. “Stop trying to push like there’s something there when there isn’t. I’m not sad, I’m just tired.”

“Okay. I don’t want to argue. You can be really stubborn when it comes to men and relationships.”

“I’m not stubborn. I’m determined. I’ve come to learn things in life and I know that people like Ryan Crawford always leave after they get what they want. They don’t care about people like us, Sam.”

I had seen this over and over again with the girls around me. Sam must have, too. Rich men never stayed. They used women for a bit of fun and then they left.

“I wouldn’t be too sure about that, Laura.”

I didn’t argue with her. If she wanted to be in denial that was on her.
