The sweetheart neckline had a built-in bustier, so I discarded my bra. The bustier did a nice job lifting my boobs up. And while the dress reached my ankles, there was a long slit at the side, revealing my entire left leg when I walked. The fabric clung to my curves but fell smoothly without any bunching or wrinkles.

It was perfect.

With a groan, I unzipped the dress and placed it on my bed. This was not good. He had been thoughtful to buy me a dress and it was gorgeous, exactly something I would pick out for myself.

Stop this, Laura. This could never work. He is a distraction and you’re just his latest conquest. It’s only one date and then he will move on and you will continue with school and work and forget about this fairytale.

Because people who mess up didn’t date billionaires or lawyers, and especially not billionaire lawyers. Don’t hope for something that could never come true.

I fisted my bedspread and closed my eyes as regret washed over me.

It’s foolish, and you are not a foolish woman. Never have been, never will be. Enjoy tonight, then get back to reality.

Peptalk over, I walked across the hallway to the bathroom and turned on the shower. A nice cold shower will remind me of exactly who I am. I was not some fairytale princess. I was more like the street vendor instead. A side character. There was no shame in knowing it, I just needed a little reminding that was all.

By twenty to seven, I was nearly ready. I added some loose curls to my long hair and swept it to the side with some bobby pins. I wore my nude heels and the thin gold bracelet my grandmother had given me for my tenth birthday.

As I walked to the bathroom to give my makeup one last check, I spotted my dad. My heart stopped. “What are you still doing here?” I asked.

He pulled out a kitchen drawer and slammed it shut. Then another. “I can’t find my car keys. Have you seen them?”

He was supposed to leave at six-thirty. Ryan would be here in fifteen minutes. Panicking, I returned to my bedroom and grabbed my keys.

“Heads up,” I threw them at him.

He caught them mid-air and inspected them. “But these are your keys. Don’t you need them to go to work?”

Then he looked up at me and his eyes bulged out. “Holy shit, Laura. You look incredible, baby girl. What kind of party did you say it was?”

“Um… it’s an old Hollywood glam theme.”

“Wow. And they gave you that dress?”

“Mmm, hmmm.”

“Do you have to return it? Because I think we could get good coin for it.”

“Yes, it’s just a loan, Dad. Now, take the keys and go.”

“But don’t you need them to get to work?”

“Um… A friend is picking me up. So, I’m good.”

He exhaled. “Well, that’s convenient. I’m sure my keys will pop up soon. I better go, honey.”

“Bye, Dad,” I said and waved from the kitchen. But as soon as he opened the door, I spotted a shiny red sports car parked at the end of our driveway.

Oh, my god! No!

“Who’s that?”

“Um, my ride,” I said, and grabbed my phone to dial his number.

“Your friends drive two hundred-thousand-dollar cars?”

“It’s crazy what young people spend on leases these days, huh?”

His eyes rounded, and he looked back at the car.
