He hung up the phone before I could ask him anything else. But really, I didn’t know what else to say. I wasn’t familiar with the law and the politics of prostitution in our town. It was smaller than New York City but I thought people should be more scandalized by the shootings in the city rather than women charging for a blow job. Maybe Sam was right and this was about control.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

Ryan: Maybe you’d prefer a quiet night instead of dinner. Are you interested?

Crawford. Ugh. I didn’t have time for him right now. I needed to think of some way to help—

Wait.

Ryan Crawford was a lawyer. A corporate one, but surely he knew more about the law than I did. Maybe I could ask him if he had any ideas on how I could help Sam. I didn’t want to lead him on, though. He had to know this would be strictly professional.

I started typing on my phone.

Me: Can we meet? I really need to speak to you.

His reply was quick.

Ryan: Yes. Come to my office.

He pinged me the address but I already knew where it was located.

Me: I’ll be there in half an hour.

Ryan: Looking forward to it.

I couldn’t explain this would be just business over a text. I would tell him in person that I was simply seeking his advice. Nothing more.

My heart hammered in my chest and I bit my lip so hard I winced from the pain.

Damn!

Why was I so nervous?

Ryan

She was coming to me. To my office. And I had no idea why. She didn’t seem like the kind of girl who easily changed her mind. She’d been determined not to give me her name or her number, and now she was coming here.

She had said she knew who I was, so I didn’t think finding out I was one of the city’s most eligible bachelors would have changed her mind. Maybe she was just looking for a job. Or a handout. But I couldn’t imagine her asking for the second.

Either way, I was eager to see her again.

“Sarah,” I said when I called my assistant. “Cancel the rest of my meetings for the day.”

“Oh,” she said, sounding surprised. Understandably, I’d never done that before. “Okay. I’ll reschedule them for tomorrow. Although the three o’clock with the advisory board has been in the books for weeks.”

I’d forgotten about that one. “All right. I’ll wrap up my appointment before then. Keep them on standby.”

“Will do, Mr. Crawford.”

With that settled, I sat in my chair, stretching my legs onto the desk, and threw a ball against the opposite wall as I waited.

And waited.

Finally, my phone rang.

“Mr. Crawford, there’s a Laura Stevens here to see you.”
