He stood while staring at me. He didn’t smile or blink. He pushed his jacket back to tuck his hands in his pocket. I couldn’t move.

Sam pushed me toward him, and away from the crushed ice.

“Wh—What can I get you?” I asked.

“Three glasses of your best scotch,” he said.

I nodded and grabbed the bottle behind me. Pouring his drinks, I felt his eyes on me. Everywhere. And my body flushed in places I didn’t think possible.

I pushed the drinks toward him and his fingers touched mine.

“We need to talk,” he said, leaning across the bar and whispering in my ear.

I shook my head. “Can’t. I’m working.”

“When you get off then. I’ll wait.”

I don’t know why I shook my head again. I just didn’t want to hear him end it. Make it official. “I’m taking Sam home. I can’t stay after work.”

It was a lie, but he didn’t know that.

He looked across the bar at Sam, then back at me.

“We’ll see,” he said and walked away.

I exhaled loudly and wiped my brow, sweat forming at my hairline.

Oh, god. He could speak to Sam and find out the truth. He did it before to find out my name. I pulled my friend aside. “Listen, if Ryan asks, I’m taking you home.”

“Um, that will be tricky since I’ll be getting into a car with tall, dark, and handsome over there.”

“I know. But he won’t stick around. Just in case he asks, though, I need you to back me up.”

“Fine.” She blew out a breath. “But I don’t understand you, Laura. Don’t you want to talk to him?”

“No. I don’t.”

She shook her head. “I don’t get it. But it’s your life.”

“Thank you.”

He didn’t come back to the bar for the rest of the night. When the evening slowed down, Sam shooed me to his table to pick up the empty glasses.

“No. You go, Sam.”

“Nope. If I’m lying for you, then you’re on clean-up duty.”

“Fine,” I seethed.

“Fine,” she said with a smile.

I walked over to his table. He stopped talking and stared at me. I straightened my dress and pulled back my hair. Ugh, why was I so fidgety? I was just picking up a few glasses.

“Excuse me,” I said, as I brushed past one of the men.

“Mmm, no need to apologize, beautiful. You can touch me anytime.” He reached for my ass.

Ryan stood up. “Back off,” he sneered.
