She kept her gaze on Colton, but I noticed her eyes shift in my direction before she immediately refocused.

“Luke will grab them for you. He will be your point person for the audit.”

“Luke?” she asked, her eyes widening. “I didn’t realize he worked here. He wasn’t mentioned on the website.”

“You looked me up?” I asked, raising my eyebrow.

“I was conducting proper research into my next audit,” she snapped back.

Perhaps. But I wasn’t convinced. I bet Meany Sweeney still imagined different ways to kill me. She would relish every moment of my torture, judging by the daggers she threw at me every time her eyes met mine.

“Today is his first day, but Luke is familiar with the family business.”

“Mr. Crawford, I think it’s best if our team works with someone with a bit more experience than…” She looked down at her phone. “Thirty minutes.”

“Forty-five,” I whispered with a grin in her direction.

“My apologies,” she said with a fake smile. “Forty-five minutes.”

Colton crossed his arms. “I understand your concern… Miss?”

Her face froze and she darted a look in my direction, daring me to say it. But I held back.

“Sweeney,” she said. “And it’s Ms. Sweeney.”

Huh. I hadn’t thought of it. Was Meany Sweeney married? Did she lay those sharp eyes on some other man every night?

Poor bastard.

“Right. Ms. Sweeney,” Colton said, correcting himself. “I have the utmost faith in my brother and know he will help you with whatever you need.”

“Absolutely,” I said. “It will be my pleasure to hamper—I mean help—however I can.”

She frowned and her full lips puckered into a sour pout.

“I’m sure your brother will be fine, Mr. Crawford,” said the accountant beside her. His eyes bounced between us. I wasn’t sure if he was afraid of my brother or Grace. I would bet a little of both and just wanted to move on from this awkward stand-off. I pitied him and what he would endure over the next week.

Grace sighed. “Fine. Let’s get started then. Shall we?” She sat back in the leather chair and crossed her legs. I didn’t recall Sweeney having long legs. She always wore those baggy jeans and frumpy sweaters.

“Mr. Crawford!”

I wondered if she wore nylons or if those were her bare legs.

Colton nudged me and nodded toward Sweeney. “I think she’s talking to you.”

Her eyes blazed as I grinned back. “Yes?”

“I will need all your bank statements for the last fiscal year,” she said, then smiled. “Now.”

Colton narrowed his eyes and whispered. “Do you two know each other?” Then he turned toward me and nudged me to the other side of the room. “Shit. Did you date her? Looks like it didn’t end well.”

“No. We never dated, but we went to school together.”

“Well, you must have done something to her because even I’m impressed with her stare-down approach.” He looked over my shoulder at Sweeney and gave a small smile of approval.

“If you like her so much, why don’t you take over this audit?” I suggested.

“No, little brother. This time you’re going to step up and take responsibility.”
