“Let’s start with today’s schedule, Ms. Grady,” I said instead.

“You can call me Ava.” Even her name made me feel guilty. It sounded like a prayer or a dark angel tempting me to give in to my urges.

“Good,” I continued. “Now, I have several meetings today, but only one is important.”

She raised her pencil and held it over her paper, waiting for my direction. “I have a two o’clock meeting with a Mr. Robert Morgan. It’s imperative that this meeting go well.”

She scribbled on her notepad. “Is this the same Robert Morgan from Morgan and Sons?” she asked.

I folded my hands on my desk, impressed that she was familiar with the company since only a few outside of our industry were. She must have done some research for this position. “Yes. I need him to sell me the land he owns on Main and First streets.”

She looked up. “Why?”

Don’t bark at her. You need this one to stay.

“It’s not your job to ask why. You just need to know this deal must happen. Your job is to take notes while Morgan is here and ensure he is comfortable. We will debrief after the meeting for anything I’ll need you to follow up on. Understood?”

Talking business brought me back to my old self again and I liked it better this way. I was sure-footed—always knew which steps to take next.

“Understood.” She waited for further instruction. There were a few other things I wanted to tell her, but none had anything to do with her job.

“Good. You may go,” I said, dismissing her. “Have Erika set up your email and show you around the company’s private file folders.”

A tiny smile played on her lips. “Will do.”

When she stood and turned away from my desk, my eyes fell to her perfectly rounded ass. I didn’t know what it was about her that had me imagining new positions and angles. She was pretty, but I’d turned down pretty many times. There was a quiet elegance about her that drew me in, and I wanted to know if I could make her scream.

“Knock, knock,” Ryan called from the doorway, rapping his knuckles lightly on the door. He stepped into my office but only had eyes for Ava.

“Hi, there. I’m Ryan Crawford.” He raised his hand forward and slapped on his best shit-eating grin.

“Ava Grady,” she said, smiling back.

Ryan held her hand a little longer than necessary and the bastard even wet his lips.

“That is all, Ava,” I said from my desk. My voice had carried louder than I’d expected. Her shoulders straightened, but she left the room without a word.

“You were rude,” said Ryan, still watching her as she walked back to her desk.

“You were eye fucking my PA,” I shot back.

Ryan laughed. “Not exactly. I’d only gotten as far as undressing her with my eyes.”

“Well, knock it off. We don’t mess around with employees.”

Ryan sat in the armchair across from me and smiled his stupid-ass smile.

“What?” I barked, turning on my laptop.

“You’re already in a bad mood and it’s not even nine o’clock. You didn’t get laid last night, did you?”

“Of course not. I have a bet to win. Besides, I’m not interested right now, anyway.”

That was a lie.

“Well, I’m very interested. How good is that PA? Any chance she’ll quit soon?”

“Back off, Ryan,” I said. “She started today and I don’t have time to look for a new one. I’ve got a meeting with Morgan this afternoon.”
