He nodded but said nothing more.

“I tried earlier, but it didn’t seem like you wanted to hear it. I want to apologize, Colton. I’m so sorry.” The tears I’d held back for weeks finally fell, and despite my tears, I felt relief at finally purging my soul. “Do you think you could ever forgive me?”

“Frances, I forgave you the moment I realized why you had done it,” he said, then dropped his head back against the plush chair and closed his eyes. “I just can’t forgive myself for falling for it.”

My heart clenched at the pain in his voice. I wanted to tell him not to use his past to ruin his present, but I would be the last person to suggest that to anyone else.

“You looked so upset when you left earlier. I thought you were still upset with me.”

“I wasn’t upset. Just confused. I’m not sure what’s going on here between us, Frances.”

“Me neither.”

“I just know when you’re near me, the smell of you, the sound of your voice, every movement of your body, calls to me.” He reached for my hand and clasped our fingers together. “Right now, I just want to pull you into my arms and press my lips over every inch of your body.”

I gulped. His words seared my heart with their intensity, and the heat from them spread everywhere.

“Are you saying you want to work through what happened?” I asked, hating the neediness in my voice.

“I don’t know,” he said, letting go and running his hand through his hair.

“What do you want, then?” I asked, angry at him now for giving me hope. I moved to stand in front of him. And waited.

Finally, he raised his eyes to look at me, and they held mine tighter than any embrace ever had. I couldn’t move.

“You,” he said. “I want you.”

Relieved, I exhaled in one loud breath and whispered, “Then come get me.”

He stared at me for only a second before, in one fluid motion, Colton placed his glass on the dining room table and pulled me into his arms. I took a breath, then his lips sealed mine and consumed the very air I breathed. Pressing myself against him, I couldn’t get close enough. “I need you,” I whispered next to his ear.

I felt goosebumps rise on the back of his neck, and then he bent down and scooped me up into his arms.

I held on tightly, wrapping my arms around his neck as he carried me up the steps and into my room. He laid me on the bed, but did not follow. I knew he did so to protect me. He knew I would tense up, and I loved him more for it. Standing above me next to the bed, he lifted his shirt, exposing the smooth ridges of his stomach. I reached for him and ran my fingers along his skin. Closing his eyes, he inhaled deeply, his nostrils flaring as I inched my way down.

“I want to take my time with you this time,” he said, opening his eyes.

Ignoring him, I pulled my sweater over my head.

His eyes fell to my bare breasts and he groaned. “You aren’t making this any easier on me, are you?”

I laughed and he simply shook his head. “Well, you’re going to regret that.”

I waited for his onslaught of kisses, but they didn’t come. Instead, he dropped to his knees in front of me and pulled me to the edge of the bed. “Colton?” I asked, pulling myself up to stare at him.

“Shh. Lay back and relax.”

How could I relax when he was about to do that? He pulled down my shorts and panties in one swift movement. Impressive.

I stared up at the ceiling, emotions spinning like a tornado inside my head. Did I want this? Yes. Was I sure? No. “It’s all right, Colton. You don’t have to do this,” I said, wondering if he thought I’d expected this.

He rubbed his hands along my hips and his nose inched closed on my thigh. “I don’t have to?” he asked.

I shook my head. “It’s okay if you don’t want to.”

“Sweetheart,” he purred. “I’ve wanted your taste on my tongue from the moment I saw you.”

Then he swiped his tongue along my clit, and I shivered. All thoughts scattered from my mind, except for one. Please god, let him do that again. And he did. Over and over again until I moaned in pleasure.
