“Sucks when your wallet is more impressive than your package,” he snickered.

I glared at him. “You know that’s not it. I’m just sick of all these fake, lying, plastic girls.”

“So go find yourself a real woman.” Ryan leaned back in the armchair. “But those women take time and effort.”

“No, thanks. I’ll just avoid dating altogether.”

Ryan barked out a laugh. “Yeah, right. You haven’t gone two days without sex.”

“Yes, I have. Don’t be ridiculous.”

Ryan grinned. “I bet you can’t go two months without dating a woman.”

Two months! My face must have shown my horror because Ryan fell over laughing.

“That’s what I thought. You know, you’re just as fake as them. You say you want complex, but really you want it easy. Just admit the truth. You can’t do it.”

“Aren’t we a little old for one of your dumb bets?” I sighed.

“They’re only dumb to you because you always lose.” He chuckled.

I wanted to shut Ryan’s cocky mouth. He constantly went on about how he was the smartest one in the family and always knew what to do before any of us had a chance to step in. Having graduated with a law degree, he rarely lost an argument. He also wasn’t the one responsible for what happened to us when we were children. I was.

I stood, placing my hands on my desk. “Two months? No sex?”

He stood too. “No sex. No touching. Nothing.”

“What do I get if I win?”

He shrugged. “Your pride?”

“Nah, I’ve already got that. I want your house in Cabo.”

Ryan sucked in his lips, considering my request. “Fine. But if I win, which I will, I get your Lamborghini.”

He knew how much I loved that car. I had it specially ordered from Italy. But I would not lose this time. “Fine,” I said.

He threw out his hand and we shook on it.

Frances

“Well, well, well. Look at you, Ms. Frances Netto.” Erika gave a little whistle.

I smoothed out my fitted white blouse and black pencil skirt. “I didn’t have time to go home and change after the job interview.”

Her eyes twinkled as she continued to smile at me. “I like this new look on you.”

“Thanks, but don’t get used to it,” I said. “I wanted to impress your friend at the mall and only wore this hoping it would help me land the position.”

“How did the interview go?”

“Really well, I think.”

“I’m proud of you, Frannie. I know it wasn’t easy for you.” She squeezed my hand.

Erika knew some of what happened in my past, but no one really knew the entire story. I didn’t like talking about it.

“See you at Katy’s,” I said. But as I walked back to the elevator, I remembered something.
