He pulled me back into his arms and kissed me. Then walked me toward the back of his office without breaking contact. I hadn’t noticed where he’d brought me until my heels clicked on porcelain tiles. I looked around while Colton shut the door.

“A bathroom?” I asked, taking in the large en suite. A thought popped up in my head. “This is where you were when I walked into your office that day. I wondered where you had come from.”

“It’s the only place I can guarantee our privacy,” he said, pushing my hair back. “You look incredible.” His eyes roamed down my body.

My lungs felt tight, as though I couldn’t breathe. I’d dreamt of him saying something like this to me for years, and now that he did, I didn’t know how to respond. So, I wet my lips, preparing to say something sexy. “Thank you,” was all that came to mind. Come on, Frances!

“I tried to resist you,” he continued. “I really did. But when I held you and kissed you in that photo booth, something inside me snapped.”

This couldn’t be happening. This couldn’t be Colton saying these words to me now. My heart raced and my mind went blank.

“Tell me you feel it too,” he said.

I felt it long before today. “Yes,” I whispered, staring up at him. His eyes heated and he took my mouth again as he grabbed me by the waist and lifted me onto the white marble countertop.

My skin tingled as he ran his hands up my dress and tightened his fingers on the back of my thighs. “Your skin is cold,” he said.

I closed my eyes, reveling in his touch. “I don’t feel cold.”

Bringing his lips next to my ear, he growled, “Let’s see if you can feel this.”

He dropped to his knees and placed a kiss on the inside of my thigh. The heat from his lips sizzled up my leg and shot straight to my core. He ran his tongue in the same direction. My body hummed under his touch, but I stopped him.

“We can’t,” I said, my hand shaking as I pushed against his shoulder, stopping him from advancing to the one place I wanted his lips the most.

“Why not?” he asked, his voice muffled next to my sensitive skin.

“Because…” I stammered. I wanted to shout, because you’re not kissing Ava, you’re kissing Frances. Instead, I whispered, “Because you’re my boss.”

He pulled his head back and raised himself to stare into my eyes. He held me there, his eyes searching mine.

“You’re right, I’m the boss. So, I need no one’s permission… but yours. You’re the only one who can put an end to this right now. The power is all in your hands.” His own trembled at my thighs as he spoke.

I swallowed.

“Do you want me?” he asked.

“Yes,” I breathed out. I couldn’t deny it. I couldn’t lie about that. “But not here.”

He nodded. “I understand.” He stepped back only for a moment, then returned to face me. “But woman, I need you.” He pulled me closer and pushed my hair back from my face so I would look up at him. “Come away with me this weekend, sweetheart.”

My heart raced and my head shouted ‘no’. But he hadn’t called me Ava. That was my undoing.

“Yes,” I whispered and closed my eyes, praying I hadn’t just made the biggest mistake of my life.

Frances

I packed my face wash and moisturizer into my overnight bag. Spotting my eBook reader on the nightstand, I considered bringing it along but realized it probably wouldn’t be necessary. I’d be too busy to read. My stomach clenched in anticipation and apprehension at the same time.

After zipping the bag, I dialed Erika’s number.

“Hello?”

“Hey, it’s me.” I sat down on my bed, pushing my hair back from my forehead.

“Are you packed?” she asked in a stern voice. To say Erika was displeased with my weekend plans would be an understatement.
