I take him into my mouth, and the flavor of his skin, combined with the chocolate, is like a party on my tongue. His hips move, and he slides into my throat, his hands moving my hair from my face to watch. I lick him clean, and drink in his pre-cum as his growls echo in the night. While I’d like to stay on my knees all night, he has other plans. He grips my shoulders and pulls me to my feet. His hands go around my body, and he grips my ass, and tugs until I’m wrapped around his hips.

He clears the table with a smooth sweep, my cake and dish landing on the deck, and he grabs his shirt, putting it under me. My dress, all balled up, is used for a pillow and I like how my comfort is important to him.

“Stay just like that,” he says and fishes a condom from his pocket. I made an appointment and went to the doctor to get on the pill, but it’s too soon to go without another form of protection. Later though, down the road—if, like me, he wants to continue this relationship—we won’t need one and I can’t wait to feel skin on skin.

He sheathes himself, and takes my legs to put them around his back. With one hard push, he’s inside me, moving, and stroking deep, his thumb on my clit, his eyes on mine. Time seems to stand still, as we stare at one another and he leans over me, pressing his pelvis to my body as he threads his fingers through mine, forging a physical connection…an emotional bond. My heart swells with everything I feel for this man, and no words need to be said, because I’m sure he’s feeling everything just as much as I am.

“Liam,” I whisper into the night, that one word letting him know everything.

“Harper,” he whispers in return as he takes me higher and higher. My body breaks, and I clench around him. He curses slightly, and throws his head back as he finds his own release.

He falls over me, and as we hug one another tight, I’m sure in this moment that this is the real thing and nothing and no one can come between us. As soon as that pops into my head, old insecurities creep in but I push them down. I have to be right about us. The alternative could very well mean heartache for me…and my son.

Liam

I glance at the gorgeous woman beside me as she maneuvers her car down the winding road. My heart pounds just a little faster when she turns my way and gifts me with a sweet smile. She places her hand over her mouth to cover her yawn, and yeah, I get it. I’m exhausted too. We spent the best part of the night making love, and you’d think this morning I’d be sated, but no. There is no way on earth that I’ll ever get enough of this woman.

“You’re staring,” she says, and I put my hand on her thigh, needing the constant contact.

I still can’t believe she set last night up for me, going through the trouble of balloons and cake, and it really was a big surprise. I guess she can keep secrets better than I thought she could.

“Your point?” She simply laughs at me, and I check the time on my phone.

Her brows lift. “Somewhere you need to be?”

“Actually, yeah,” I say. She’s not the only one who can keep a secret when need be. She looks back at the road and the love I have for her expands inside my chest. I take a deep fueling breath.

“I have a busy day too. I have to pick up Gavin and get to the store. Charlie will be in for his bath, and then this afternoon I have to walk a few dogs.”

“A dog walker’s work is never done.” Usually I go with her, but this afternoon, I’m going to be all tied up. “I guess you’ll be glad when you’re running the business yourself and can make your own hours.”

“That would be a dream come true.”

I grin, wanting to make every dream she’s ever had come true. “I’ll meet you back at the house for dinner. We’ll order in?”

“Sounds good,” she says and for a quick second, I think I spot something in her eyes, something that looks like concern, but when I squeeze her leg, she gifts me with another big smile and I chalk that uneasy look up to exhaustion. I could use a good nap too, and kind of feel bad for keeping her up all night when she has work this morning.

We fall into a comfortable silence as she drives and I take in the scenery. A short while later, she drops me at my place. Before I get out of her car, I lean into her and place a soft kiss on her mouth.

“Thanks for last night,” I whisper into her mouth. “That was the best birthday present ever.”

Her smile is soft and warm, her eyes a bit dazed as she sits there with her mouth poised open, like she’s waiting for more kisses, and dammit, I plan to give them to her. Now. Tomorrow. Forever. I glance at my phone again, and she straightens in her seat.

“I’d better get going.”

“Yeah, you don’t want to be late,” she says, even though she has no idea what I’m up to.

I reluctantly open the door, not wanting to go, but knowing I have to. “Drive safely,” I say, before using a great deal of force to close her door. The damn thing looks like it’s ready to fall off the hinges. After my meeting, maybe I’ll head to the car dealership and look around. Then again, I appreciate my nut sack and she’s likely to neuter me if she came back here and found a new car, just for her. I chuckle at that. She’s not the kind of girl to take gifts of such grandeur. If I was her fiancé, however…

I stand in the driveway as she backs o

ut and disappears down the road. I hurry inside, do a quick change of clothes, and jump in my truck. Fifteen minutes later, I stop to pick up Cole, who’s been helping me with my search.

“You took off early last night,” he says with a grin. “Didn’t even hang around for cake.”

“I had cake,” is all I say.
