She can’t answer me, still being rocked by pleasure, but I don’t need her verbal approval. Elise’s body is telling me everything I need to know. With an animalistic noise, I start to come, our flesh clapping together, until I go silent and still, whispering a single, “Fuck,” as I come inside her. I feel the heat of her pussy grabbing me like a vice and the quivering of her thighs against me. It’s perfect, all of it. A moment I’ll never forget for as long as I live.

Dan

After our interludein the gardens, I helped Elise fix her dress, and we stayed there to watch the sun fully set while I held her in my arms. It wasn’t the usual afterglow I’d enjoy, naked in bed with a woman, but it was unbearably meaningful to me to just be able to spend those moments with her. I buried my nose in her hair and just breathed her in, the woman in my arms a million times more beautiful to me than the sunset happening in front of us.

Taking that extra time to be together is biting us in the ass now, though, because as we approach the villa, it’s readily apparent that everyone else is already sitting down for dinner in the dining room, the French windows wide open and giving us a full view of everyone. In fact, we can see the warm glow from the candlelit dining table from the road, and I’m all too aware that they are watching us come up the walkway and into the house.

“We’re fucked,” Elise whispers.

“Just play it cool. We’re friends, remember? Friends spend time together.”

“Oh, yeah? When was the last time you and Andries went and watched a sunset on a paradise island and snuggled?”

I glare down at her, and she returns the look. “Point taken. But what else can we do? Let’s just get through dinner. I’ll try and get your brother drunk and then maybe he’ll forget about it.”

“Ha,” she scoffs, head shaking. “This is Andries we’re talking about. He’s going to go back to his suite and write an angry journal entry about this, so he’ll remember it forever.”

“You’re such a pessimist.”

“Better than a foolish optimist.”

We stop in front of the dining room entryway, quickly checking each other’s clothes to make sure they’re not messed up in any sort of way, and with a nod to each other, we enter to join the rest of the group.

“Welcome back,” Roxanne greets with a broad smile.

Her fiancé, though, is not so welcoming. “And where have the two of you been for two and a half hours?”

“Just to get some sorbet,” Elise chirps, taking a seat and happily accepting the crisp white wine the server offers. She’s coming off too positive, but it’s too late now.

“Sure.” My friend laughs sarcastically, everyone else at the table looking uneasy. “Since when do the two of you hang out together so much?”

“What are you even talking about?” Elise counters in that tone that can only come from siblings that have spent their lives arguing with one another. “Dan and I hang out all the time in Amsterdam. You know that.”

“There’s a difference between a bagel before class and disappearing for two hours during a family trip,” Andries snaps. Roxanne lays a hand on his shoulder, and he sucks in a huge breath, letting it out slowly as he composes himself. “But you’retelling me nothing weird is going on between the two of you, right?”

“Right,” Elise and I both say at the same time.

In the main portion of the house, the doorbell rings, and we all hear the butler opening the door to let whoever has shown up in. Andries smiles now, looking smug, and I have a terrible feeling that I know what he’s done.

“That’s a relief because if not, it would be really awkward for the guests that I’ve invited.” He makes a show of taking a long drink of his wine while Elise slowly realizes what’s going on.

“Who did you invite, Andries?” she hisses.

“Just Tiffany and Mia.” He shrugs. “Mia was going on and on about how much she liked Dan, and since I know he’s into her too, I went ahead and told her that he found her attractive but was just too shy to say so.” He chuckles, looking at me. “We all know you have never been shy, but I just wanted to make it easier for you, man. You do find her attractive, right? That’s what you told me yesterday.”

I want to throttle my best friend right then and there, upcoming wedding or not. With my jaw clenched, I tell him, “Yeah, I guess I did.”

Elise’s eyes shoot up to look at me for a second, hurt, before glancing back down at the kale salad in front of her. She’s giving no indication that what Andries just said is bothering her, but I know better, and I feel like an idiot for lying yesterday just to get Andries off my back. Mia was a pretty enough woman, but she had just been a pawn to make Elise feel a little bit jealous, but now…

She and Tiffany walk into the dining room, Mia immediately rushing over to me and giving me a quick hug before sitting. Elise had taken the seat across from me, and now Mia is on my left. What a disaster.

“Thanks so much for inviting us,” Mia crows happily. “I was worried you weren’t into me,” she tells me, lowering her voice so only I can hear her. “But I think it’s cute that you’re shy.”

I fight the urge to roll my eyes. “Uh. Sure.”
