I believe it, but I don’t. The chaos magic is already fighting back, trying to break down my energy. It sets charges along my pores, waiting for just one of them to give in to their insidious tactics.

But I fight back harder. With forces much more powerful.

The awe I absorb from the horizon. The peace I pull from the early stars.

The connection I feel to the two awesome people below.

“Everybody ready?” I call down, already deciding to ignore Kell’s visible gulps.

“Huh?” she retorts. “Kara. Are you freaking kidding m—”

Her own long wail is her interruption, starting as soon as her feet leave the floor. But I can’t focus on it. The moment has come to tap fully into what’s inside. The force of my power. The lift of my love.

“Fax accenditur superiores. Hecate declarat. Ego sum unus cum Hecate.”

And the dominating power from those beautiful words.

Bringing my brother and sister closer.

Closer…

“What the living crap is going on?” Kell demands.

“Not sure, but it beats heli-skiing ten to one.”

I can’t afford a single second to laugh at their typical exchange. I haven’t torn a huge hole in the net here. They’ll have to go through one at a time. If we don’t do this quickly and right, one or both of them will be imprisoned again by it. No do-over margins. I’m still stunned we’ve found the one-and-done window.

Though we’re still painfully far from thedonepart.

“Jaden! You’re first. Tuck in your arms and legs. As soon as you’re out, head toward the pergola over the front patio and climb down from there. You remember enough from parkour class, right?”

“Hell yeah.”

My brother’s enthusiasm is the right ingredient at the right moment for this stress soup. I just wish Kell would take a bigger taste of the new broth.

“So any suggestions for the girl who barely survives twirls in barre class?” she bites out.

“Watch Jaden. Just do the same thing, and make like a mummy,” I encourage. “I’ve got you.”

Holy crap, I hope I’ve got her.

But I have to do more than hope.

I have toknow.

That means focusing. Remembering those moments yesterday when I had Hecate and Circe too. I had both of them and have to think that some of it wasn’t just their powers reflecting in mine. Some of it was me.

Some of ithadto be me.

It’s only a shred of confidence, but I cling to all of it with everything I’m worth. Tighter.Tighter.

“I’m out!” Jaden yells.

“Then get going.” I force myself not to bask in his fast hug. “Rerek might burn this place down any second!”

“Thanks,” Kell grouses. “So uplifting.”

“Shut up and get your cute backside up here.”
