“You should probably get that.”

“I can get it later.”

“It’s your special number,” Jen says into my ear. “I’m surprised you need me to tell you with that annoying ringtone.”

With a frown, I press a kiss to her mouth and hurry out of the kitchen, hunting for my phone until I find it on the desk underneath a pile of paperwork. I wheel around and see Jen hop off the kitchen counter, teasing me and shaking her ass as she picks her shirt up off the floor.

“I’m going to get you for this,” I mouth as I count backwards from ten before answering in a brusque tone. The call to one of the other agents, confirming security schedules, lasts less than a few minutes, and when I hang up, Jen rounds the corner in a pair of jeans that accentuate her behind perfectly, and a sweater.

“I’ve got to go. I’ll be back soon,” Jen says without looking at me, shoving her feet into a pair of shoes and grabbing her purse.

“Travis?”

Jen looks directly at me. “Remember that big deal I told you about? I think it’s going down tonight. If I can just get Travis to tell me…”

I clench my teeth. “I can’t pretend to be happy about it.”

Jen sighs. “I hate when he touches me too, but a man like Travis…it’s how he operates.”

“You’ve got to leave him wanting more,” I add, with a shake of my head. “Still not happy.”

“I forgot how visceral things get when you’re undercover,” Jen admits, the look of disgust on her face hard to hide. “I’ll be glad when this is over.”

“Me too.”

“I can watch you from a closer distance,” I offer after a brief pause. “I don’t think anyone knows who I am yet.”

Jen’s expression softens. “No, please don’t. I need to focus, and it’ll be hard to do when you’re nearby.”

At least I know I have the same effect on her that she does on me.

Like nothing else matters.

We are both well and truly screwed.

“Be careful,” I tell her. “We’re so close.”

Jen’s hand darts between us, and she gives my hand a firm squeeze. “I’ve got this under control, don’t worry.”

I glance down at our intertwined fingers, and a strange feeling unfurls in my stomach. “Never doubted it.”

She leaves in a hurry, and I’m glad for it. Any more, and I would have found a way to keep her here. I worry, now more than ever, and I’m yearning for this to be over and done with.

I wander over to the computer screen and sit down. Moments later, I watch Jen step into the brusque afternoon sun.

What’s your plan, huh? Are you just going to keep pretending like all of this is normal? You can’t keep playing house forever.

Why the hell not? I want to do everything with Jen.

Considering I haven’t had a personal relationship since Quantico, getting attached to Jen was a bit of a surprise. And after the last two days, she has instilled her way into my heart.

And I’m not sure I want her to leave it.

Ever.

We spend hours each night talking about anything and everything we can think of. And in the morning, we usually enjoy a quiet breakfast before reality sets in.

Jen makes me question everything, including whether ornot I’m cut out to be an agent.
