Paislee

“He did what?” Meghan balked.

“Keep your voice down,” I say, looking around to be sure no one is paying attention. “What I have going on with Sebastian feels wild and illicit and sinful and oh-so thrilling.”

“I can't believe you got the job and the man.”

“I can't say he's mine,” I tell Meghan. “It's just a fun arrangement.”

“That's how it starts. No one meets anyone's eyes across a room and falls instantly in love. They fuck your brains out first, love comes later.”

I frown at Meghan's choice of words. I don't know why but describing what I have with Sebastian as just sex feels utterly wrong.

“I can tell you that it's more than that. It's more than just sex when Sebastian touches me the way he does; so tenderly. The way our bodies have become so attuned to each other's—"

“What is it?” Meghan, who's always been very perceptive, asks.

“I think it's more than just sex. At least for me.” I confess.

“Oh my God,” Meghan says, looking horrified.

“What?”

“You're falling in love, Paislee.”

“I'm not sure. I don't think I am.” I say with a shake of my head. Even though I can feel deep inside that it's true. Sebastian has shaken my little universe from the moment he stepped into my classroom. The way he regarded me with those cold hazel eyes and asked about the welfare of his daughter had me hooked.

“That's disgustingly cute.” She continues as if I'd not spoken at all. “He'd better treat my girl right.”

“I'm not falling for Sebastian,” I announce, wondering who I am trying to convince.

“But you've moved into his home. What's left to take over? His last name?”

I chuckle.

“You're insane, Meghan.”

“But you still love me.” She shrugs and then looks at me a little more seriously. “I hope you don't get hurt. What happens when he decides to end this mutually enjoyable arrangement?”

I look away from her. I’m shocked at the prick I feel in my chest at the thought of our little arrangement ending. Maybe Meghan is right. Maybe I am falling for the arrogant billionaire.

“Oh, God...” I mutter as I drop my face into my hands and close my eyes.

“Paislee,” Meghan mutters worriedly.

“I think you're right,” I say from behind my hands. My voice is muffled and scratchy from the emotions that are currently coursing through me. “Maybe I am beginning to develop deep feelings for Sebastian.”

I take a sneak peek at Meghan; she's looking at me with something akin to pity. “You've got it bad.”

I look out the window, not knowing what to say to that.

“The last thing I want is to see you get hurt.”

“I'm not sure Sebastian would want to hurt me,” I tell her because it's the truth.

“Nobody ever wants to hurt us. At least not the good ones. These things just happen.”

I look down at my cup of coffee, knowing that Meghan is right. When Sebastian's mother was mean, Sebastian hadn't set out for that to happen. Even though he had not intended to, taking me to dinner at his mom's had caused me pain.
