“Everything should be,” I begin to say.

Now, Sebastian looks even more confused.

“What do you mean? Is Callie alright?” He asks, looking panicked for a second.

“She's upstairs and sound asleep,” I tell him.

“So, what's going on?”

I shake my head as I realize how weird this is. It isn’t even my place to tell him how to parent.

When Sebastian continues awaiting a reply, I know I have to say something.

“I enjoy spending time with Callie.”

“I think I have come to sense that.” He says with a confused smile. He is smart enough to tell me that I'm headed somewhere with that.

“She's a lovely kid.” I look up at him to find his gaze on me. “What I don't understand is why you don't carve out enough time to spend with her,” I say, watching as his eyes darken with what appears to be the beginnings of anger.

“What are you getting at?”

“I've worked here for a week now. Not one day in the entire week have you come home early enough to tuck her into bed. I would know if you had because Callie and I talk about everything.”

My heart plummets when I see a look of hurt cross his features.

“So, you stayed later than necessary to tell me to tuck Callie in bed?” He questions, looking at me like I've gone mad.

“Let's not try to downplay how important that is,” I say with a glare. “I'm talking about coming home early enough to do stuff with her. Have dinner together. Have conversations with her. Bond with her. Do you even know how she's adjusting to homeschooling? Have you asked her?”

Sebastian gives me a look of utter disdain, turns around, and begins to stalk out of the room. I get up and hurry after him.

“I'm not trying to cause any drama—"

“I would suggest you stay out of something that isn't any of your business.”

I grab his bicep at the staircase landing, gasping when I realize that he is all hard flesh and muscle. Momentarily distracted by the feel of him, I blink rapidly when he glares into my eyes.

“You made her my business, Sebastian,” I whisper. “I'm not judging or trying to upset you. I just want her to know she's loved, and not only when it comes to receiving the best gifts. She's very impressionable. I know that whatever happens to her now, will stay with her forever.”

Sebastian gazes at me for a long time. I see a plethora of emotions swirling in his eyes despair, sadness, hopelessness. He whispers in a low tone of voice, his lips barely moving.

“You don't know anything.”

“I know enough,” I tell him, my tone earnest.

“I am doing all I can to give her a great future.”

“You can do that and love her right?”

“I am loving her right now.” He growls in my face, his eyes shining with anger.

“Then show her and spend time with her!” I yell. Catching myself, I take a deep breath and continue. “Let me plan a little trip for just the two of you. You can go to the park, the zoo, or maybe to the movies.”

Sebastian regards me with cool eyes for a few moments.

“You always insert yourself into things that aren't any of your concern, don’t you?”

“You are paying me big bucks to make Callie's entire life my absolute concern.” I point this out archly.
