Callie giggles.

"I'd love it if I was able to do the same thing all the time."

With Callie’s statement, I have a light bulb moment.

“Maybe we can do that. Have you follow a set schedule? Would you like that?”

“I would love that.” She reveals this with a wide smile.

I smile right back, feeling a little proud of myself.

We get to work, outlining everything we need to accomplish during our daily lessons. It's a really fun moment for Callie and me. When the final draft is ready, she picks it up and examines it carefully.

“I like the little breaks between lessons. It's something we never got in school.”

“I like that too. Even teachers need to catch a break sometimes.”

Callie giggles.

"So, are you teaching two jobs now?" She asks.

I shake my head as I observe Callie, who's still watching me.

"Wait..." The little girl says, holding a finger up. "Did you resign?"

I swallow hard at the painful memory that suddenly clogs my head.

"I didn't have to," I admit a little sadly.

"You were fired?" Callie's eyes bulge.

"Something like that," I answer, wondering what Callie's reaction would be if I told her that we have to go back to learning.

"What did you do?"

"I'm afraid I do not know." I chuckle without mirth.

At least Callie’s direct question has answered mine. I guess she was not the one to reveal my little act with her father at school.

"I'm sorry." She empathizes. "That must have sucked." Callie frowns as she stares into the distance. "That school sucks."

"Good riddance then." I laugh as I reopen the textbook and look up at Callie. "Ready to dive right back in?"

"Sure." Callie says, angling closer. The rest of the class flows for at least another hour before she abruptly stands.

"I need water." She mutters, already moving towards the door.

I sigh and close the book, following her out.

When Callie turns and sees me, surprise flickers across her features.

"You're coming with me?"

"Duh, I'm thirsty too," I say sassily, rolling my eyes jokingly. I had learned to act like a kid around children. It made them more comfortable around me. My actions seem to work because Callie giggles and runs back toward me to grab my hand.

"We better hurry."

When we get to the well-stocked kitchen, I find the housekeeper from the first day. Rose. She flashes us a smile and I smile back awkwardly in return. I don't know how strict Sebastian is and whether he would appreciate me visiting his kitchen like this. When I linger at the door, Rose glances up from the vegetables she's chopping and says, “Please come in.”

I do. As soon as I get close enough to smell the enticing aroma of what is cooking on the stove, my stomach growls loudly.

"Your stomach always does that." Callie giggles.

"Well, I was eager for my first day," I say, fighting the blush that creeps up my neck at the housekeeper's low chuckle.

"There's a sandwich and other snacks you might like. Please help yourself. " Rose says.

I thank her. I am glad that the woman had not offered to make it for us. That would have been more awkward.
