I resist the urge to facepalm.

“My name is Paislee Donovan.”

This time, when my eyes do meet his, I glare.

He shrugs.

“That's what I just said.” He argues. “Hello, baby.” He continues in the same breath. His tone going soft and chocolaty as his eyes land on his daughter, who offers him a shit-eating grin and begins to amble over.

“Daddy.” She says as she comes to stand in front of her father, who bends and gives her a soft kiss on the forehead.

I balk at the girls' abrupt change.

“How are you?” Mr. Vaughn asks in a soft tone.

“I'm fine now that you are here.”

“Good.” Mr. Vaughn says. “You and I are going to do something special just the two of us when we get home today, alright?”

The little girl nods.

“Now go and pack up while I talk to your teacher.” He says and watches with affection in his eyes as Callie begins to skip away.

I am a little too shocked to say anything. When I turn again to Mr. Vaughn, his eyes are dark, and he looks unimpressed.

“I am here, and I find my daughter well and cheerful enough.” He states bluntly.

“She wasn't that lively three minutes ago,” I point out, remembering how the little girl had thrown my hands off her when I tried to placate her.

“Why did you call me here?”

“Miss Vaughn had gotten in trouble with her classmate and had thrown a tantrum. I found it very difficult to calm her down.”

“Well, I just calmed her down, didn't I?” The man says.

“But—"

“There's no but, Miss Jonathan.” He says as he begins to turn away. “I can't believe you called me here to do your job.”

Callie skips to his side and he immediately takes her hands in his much larger ones. Turning to me one last time so that his almost golden eyes nearly take my breath away, he says, “I hope you do enough next time to earn that paycheck.”

And with that, he walks out the door.
