“What?”

“I attempted to poach Miss Donovan, but she turned me down.”

“Ah...” Mr. Beatles mutters as if he's just had a light bulb moment. “Paislee loves her job; I would expect that of her. She is the best we have.”

“That's why I need her.”

“But she said no, and the kids here need her too. As I said, she's the absolute best here, the kids adore her."

“I want you to make her say yes.”

This time, Mr. Beatles doesn't sound remotely impressed when he asks, “How do I do that?”

“Let her go,” I state simply.

Even though guilt weighs a little on my chest, I have managed to convince myself that this is the best course of action. I am certain that after the many benefits I am going to shower Paislee with, she is going to be glad I convinced her to change her mind.

“I'm afraid I cannot do that, Mr. Vaughn.”

“Fifty thousand dollars if you make it happen.”

I do not so much as blink when I state this and can hear the sharp intake of breath from the other end.

“Mr. Vaughn,” Mr. Beatles starts. “Are you trying to bribe me to fire the best teacher we currently have?”

“That is exactly what I am asking of you,” I say unapologetically.

“I will do it for two hundred.”

“We have a deal,” I conclude and hang up.

I knew Mr. Beatles would agree. I like to think that people have a price. You only need to know what that price is. But it’s different with someone like Paislee Donovan. I don't believe that Paislee can ever be bought with money.
