Callie turns to her, and her eyes widened at the sight of the treat.

I chuckle.

“If you come sit with me, I can let you have two of these.” Mrs. Jones bargains.

Callie is on her feet and half running across the room in seconds, which is something that draws a chuckle out of me.

When I turn to Mr. Beatles, I find his stare curious. Before he can get the question out, I beat him to it.

“I sent Ashley Alwyn down here.”

“You did.” Mr. Beatles confirms, offering nothing more.

“I was expecting that she would still be here.”

“Why is that Miss Donovan?”

I look over at Mr. Beatles in disbelief. Did he not even ask Ashley what she had done?

“She called Callie a freak,” I whisper as if we are not the only ones in his closed office.

“Kids say stupid things all the time. You don't call up their parents each time they raise a finger.”

“Ashley didn't just raise a finger.” I point out, wondering what the hell is wrong with Mr. Beatles. “She verbally bullied Callie, who angrily fought her. She should be disciplined.”

Mr. Beatles raises his brows at her.

“Kids have done worse, Paislee.”

“This is worse on its own, trust me. I know how I found Callie after the whole ordeal.”

I can't help but recall how hard the little girl had sobbed. My heart breaks again at the memory.

“Ashley was just being a kid, Miss Donovan. They'll both forget that this happened in no—"

There is a knock on the door. I turn towards it, already knowing who is on the other side. It’s been barely eight minutes. Had he flown down here?

Mr. Beatles tells the person to enter, and the door flings open. Sebastian strides in, wearing one of his signature tuxedos. His hair is brushed back with not a strand out of place. His eyes are directed at Mr. Beatles who has begun to squirm in his seat.

“What happened?” He asks Mr. Beatles, who now has a reassuring smile on his face.

“It is something we can handle.”

Mr. Beatles turned that smiling face in my direction as if urging me to grin along.

“Miss Donovan here was able to calm Callie, but she still asked to see you.”

“You still haven't told me what happened.” Sebastian's voice is steely, and his gaze is dark as it remains on Mr. Beatles. Mr. Beatles looks like he is seconds away from shooting out of his chair and screaming like a banshee towards the door.

“Callie got into a fight with a classmate.” Mr. Beatles finally reveals, this time, avoiding Sebastian's gaze.

There is silence and tension so thick that I can cut it with a knife. Even though it stings a little that Sebastian has not even acknowledged me, I am glad that I am not the one at the receiving end of his wrath.

“Where is she?” He asks as he turns away from us, as if we are both a disappointment.

“Right out with the secretary.” Mr. Beatles informs him as he gets up quickly to lead the way to the secretary's office. Sebastian turns to him with a hard glare.

“I would rather Miss Donovan accompany me.”
