Sebastian nods at my words, and then states in a tone tinged with faux casualness, “You said that you have someone in your life who is autistic.”

“Had.” I correct, my mood taking a dive.

Sebastian studies me closely but thankfully does not ask for details.

“I'm sorry for your loss.” He voices. His eyes aren't filled with pitiful sympathy which I'm grateful for.

“The memories of him are alive in me,” I whisper.

I see something flash in the man's eyes but cannot read the emotion before it is shuttered off to that blank look he always wears.

“I will admit that I am very much new to this development and aside from her doctor, would like to discuss it with someone who's had firsthand experience.”

“There are support groups—"

“I don't need that.” Mr. Vaughn says in a hard tone.

I nod quickly.

“Of course.”

“Callie has been dying to see you for days.” He continues as if I had not spoken. “She wants to show you her portrait.” After a definitive pause, he adds, “She likes you, which is honestly a surprise. Callie doesn't like a lot of people.” He casually jokes.

I chuckle.

“So, I'm inviting you to dinner.”

As he begins to walk to the door, he states simply, “This evening. 7 p.m.”

He continues as if rattling off instructions to someone who is always at his beck and call. He lets himself out without another word and I’m left there wondering what the hell had just happened.
