“How did you know to get her that?” I question, looking a little suspiciously at the doctor, who has a wide grin on his face.

“It didn't cost that much money.” He confesses. “When I am not busy being a doctor, I love to draw.” He admits when I pin him with a glare.

I study him closely, noting the way he looks at Callie. I have garnered a few enemies and understand that not everyone wishes me well. Frederick appears completely harmless, yet I silently continue to appraise him.

How did he know to paint something for her so quickly?

Frederick chuckles and says, “I know what you are thinking. I have most of my priced drawings here. When I saw her with those coloring pencils, I knew she loved to draw and thought she'd appreciate one of my paintings. I wasn't wrong.”

His explanation finally clicks, and I breathe a sigh of relief.

“Thank you for being thoughtful.”

Frederick smiles.

“It wasn't hard. Callie is a ray of sunshine.”

We shake hands and Frederick jokes a little with Callie, who gazes up at him like he is some sort of hero. Soon, we are out the door and on our way home. As I look out the window, I realize that I have to admit the painful truth to myself. Miss Donovan had indeed been right.
