“Come home with me tonight,” I offer impulsively.

Her head snaps up.

“We’ll clean up here,” I tell her. “You can call the cops, call Wally’s Windows. Just get them to deliver the window tomorrow. It’ll be cheaper. I’ll come by with your security system tomorrow and you can still watch Kill Bill 2 tonight, at my place.”

I’m trying to make it sound like she should stay with me tonight because it’s better for her, but the truth is, I want her to stay tonight. I like the idea of her coming home with me. I don’t want her sleeping here by herself.

Lainey is still staring at me. “No. I... I should call Cass.”

“She’s probably busy with Duncan. Why interrupt them when you can just crash at mine? We’ll pick up some takeaway on the way back and have a movie night. Whatever you want.”

“But...”

I can see the questions in her eyes. What are we doing? We were only supposed to have one more night. If she comes home with me, what will it mean?

I wish I knew.

It’s not like she’ll be sleeping on my couch if she comes back to my unit. She’ll be in my bed, which means we’ll be sleeping together again. Maybe I’m just putting off having to navigate friendship again after the night we just spent together, and maybe I’m dying to burn through more of our chemistry, but she can’t stay here. I’ll never sleep if I’m thinking about her being in danger.

Leaning the broom against the table, I walk over to her and take her face in my hands, skimming my thumbs over her cheekbones. “I want to keep you safe and warm, and as far away from burglars as possible. Please come home with me tonight so I’m not up all night worrying about you.”

Lainey searches my face for what feels like minutes before her eyes soften and she nods. “Okay, I’ll come home with you.”
