“Enough!” I snap. “Everyone’s concern is... touching, but I came here to watch a movie. Does anyone think we might actually be able to do that tonight?”

I’m hugely pissed at Cass right now. Not only is girl’s night over, but we’ve just spent far too long discussing my sex life with the guys. Not. Cool.

Cass takes one look at my face and then stands up. “Lainey wants to watch a movie, so let’s put one on.”

“We were watching one,” I say, hoping my ire at her and the situation is clear.

“It’s halfway through. The guys won’t know what’s going on.”

And they won’t like the movie. She doesn’t say it, but I know that’s what she means. I want to have a crack at her for changing what we were doing for the guys. It’s on the tip of my tongue to say I’m going to call an Uber, but Ben is only here because of me and leaving now would make me feel guilty for ruining his night more than I already have.

Besides, calling for an Uber at this time on a Saturday evening could mean waiting for hours, anyway. Not to mention it’ll cost me an arm and a leg. The better alternative is to crash on the couch.

But then I’ll probably be forced to listen to Cass and Duncan go at it all night long.

Maybe if I drink enough, I can pass out.

I stand up and walk into the kitchen to pour myself another glass of wine.

“What are we watching?” I ask when I walk back into the room.

“The only action movie Cass says she’ll watch,” Ben says as I sit back down next to him.

“The Rundown,” I deduce.

“Yup.”

The other couch has been moved so that Cass and Duncan are at a better angle to see the television.

The whole setup is cosy, and just for a second I catch myself wondering if this is what it would feel like if this was a double date, Cass and Duncan, and Ben and me.

I can feel Ben’s eyes on me as I make myself comfortable by propping my feet on the coffee table in front of us.

“What?” I ask when I turn to see him looking at me with an eyebrow raised.

He motions to the glass in my hand. “Where’s mine?”

“I thought you didn’t like wine.”

“I don’t, but if there’s no beer, wine will do.”

“You want me to share this superb bottle of Penfolds with you when you clearly don’t have the palate to enjoy it?” I ask with mock shock.

He plucks the glass out of my hands and proceeds to take a sniff, before treating me to his impersonation of a wine critic, swilling it, aerating it through his teeth, and finally, gargling it.

When he eventually swallows it, I wait for his comments. “Well?”

“It’ll do,” he tells me, grinning in a way that makes my heart beat faster.

“Those words are not an acceptable answer if you want me to get up from my comfy position on the couch and get you a glass.”

“Fine, I’ll keep this glass and you can get another one for yourself.”

The cheek of the man! I huff out a breath and then stand up to make yet another trip to the kitchen. Glaring at Ben, I ask, “Anyone else want anything while I’m up?”

“More popcorn,” Cass says.

“Chips, if you’ve got them, please,” Duncan adds.
