“I’m heading to Cass’s.”

My heart starts pounding hard. Maybe I should have seen this coming, but stupidly, I didn’t. “I told you, Duncan, I’m not going with you.”

“I know.” He nods in Angie’s direction. “You’re busy. But I’m going to head over anyway.”

Red spots blur my vision. “What about Lainey?”

“What about her?”

“They’re having a girl’s night.”

“So? It’s not like I’ll kick her out the door or anything. I’ll watch a movie with them both and when she leaves...”

Lainey’s going to feel like a third wheel, and she’s going to feel like she has to go if Duncan shows up without me. Damn it! I glare at Duncan, who looks back at me, waiting. The fucker knows what I’m going to decide before I do.

Mad doesn’t begin to describe how I feel as I turn to Angie. There’s a taxi here. She’ll just have to go home without me. “Sorry, babe, we’re going to have to do this another night.”

She can’t quite hide her disappointment, and I feel a kick of guilt for flirting with her all night and then sending her home alone, but Lainey needs me.

Angie asks for my phone and puts her number in when I hand it to her.

“Call me,” she says after she’s done. She passes my phone back and then slides into the closest taxi.

Once she’s gone, Duncan asks Seb if he wants to come with us.

“Nah, I’ll leave you two to your movie night. I’m going to have an early one.”

And then Seb takes the next taxi, leaving me and Duncan to take the third cab in line.

“You could have gone home with Angie,” Duncan says, a grin on his face.

“I’m not leaving Lainey to feel like a third wheel.”

I can’t be sure what his reply is, but it sounds a lot like, “Whatever you say, man. Whatever. You. Say.”
