“Okay, I guess I’ll see you tomorrow, then,” she says, sounding lighter. Happier.

“You will.”

The relief I feel after she says goodbye and hangs up is big. For the first time all week, I feel like things are going my way.

“Yes! Go Snooker! Go, go, go! You little beauty!”

I kiss the ticket in my hand, the one that just made me two hundred dollars.

“Mate, you need to rub some of your luck off on me.” Seb is standing next to me at the barrier that separates the crowd from the racetrack.

“I’m not rubbing anything on you, Seb.”

“I’m his good luck charm.”

On my other side is Angie, a stunning brunette with a great rack. Her little black dress hugs her curves, and the woman has plenty of them. This is my third win today, and yeah, she’s definitely been lucky for me, but as beautiful as she is, I’m hanging with Seb and Duncan for the next few hours. After the races, we’ll go to the pub, and I’ll pick up there, or I’ll find Angie and go home with her later. Until then, it’s me and the guys.

Except I haven’t seen Duncan for a while. He’d better not be off in some corner messaging Cass right now, because he promised us he wouldn’t.

“Let’s go get your winnings,” Seb says.

He sounds so excited by the idea, anyone listening would think we were splitting the take.

“While you do that, I’m going to freshen up,” Angie says. “I’ll be back in a minute.”

She gives me a look that screams ‘I want your sex’.

Seb punches me in the arm. “She’d probably jump you right here if you gave her the nod.”

“I might hang out with her later. Right now, I want to know where the fuck Duncan is.”

Seb and I turn away from the racetrack and look for Duncan in the smallish crowd hanging at the racetrack. It’s early October, so it’s not exactly peak racing season, but we’re gearing up for it. Melbourne Cup will be here in a month and then the place will be packed.

“I swear, if he’s on the phone to Cass, I’ll kill him.”

“Maybe we’ll find him on the way to collect your winnings,” Seb suggests.

“Why are you so desperate for the money? You short or something? Tell me you didn’t bet everything you had on Lord Frog.”

Seb’s ears turn a shade of crimson, then his face follows suit. “I really thought I was onto a winner. Surely you can shout your mate a beer, since you’re up and all.”

“Yeah.” I sigh. “No problem.” What are friends for?

We’re heading towards the counter to collect my winnings when we see Duncan in the corner, a huge idiotic smile on his face as he sits there messaging... well, one guess.

“That traitor,” Seb mutters.

“I should have expected this. He can’t go a few hours without contacting her.”

Duncan quickly stops smiling when he sees me and Seb watching him. He looks just as ashamed as Seb had when I asked him about Lord Frog. Sliding his phone into his pocket, he walks towards us.

“Hey, did you win again?” he asks.

“Yeah, I won. You’d know that if you were there.”

“I went to the toilet and on the way back I answered a message from Cass. What’s the big deal?”
