I should leave it. I know I should leave it. It’s just that... well, I don’t leave things. I can’t.

“I’m not sure Randall knows how to run this business, or how to deal with clients.”

“Is that so?” Dirk’s voice is soft, dangerously so. “Did you know Randall was the one who secured the contract with Money Guard?”

Shit, I didn’t know this. “No,” I answer honestly.

“Perhaps you should spend more time focusing on developing a work ethic, rather than criticising my son. This is a family business. If you aren’t happy...”

“No, it’s fine. It’s good.”

There are some fathers who have their sons’ backs, whether it’s deserved or not. It makes me envy the little pissant, and envy is the last emotion I want to experience when it comes to Randall Eagle.

“If that’s all, Mr Armstrong?” Dirk says, turning back to his computer.

“Yes. That’s all.”

As I walk out of the office, I resist the urge to hit something. I don’t know how much longer I can stay with Eagle Eye Security. I’m sure Randall is looking for an excuse to fire me. Making up bullshit about me not doing my job properly means I won’t be able to fight him on it, either.

Lainey was right when she said starting at the bottom in another company would be better than working for Randall. When Dirk managed everything, the job was okay, but things are changing and it’s time to get out.

I take my phone out of my pocket and dial Lainey’s number as soon as I’m outside. She’s the only person I want to talk to about the fact that I’m probably about to lose my job and need to start looking for something else. With Amber, I would have been ashamed, but I know Lainey has my back.

“Ben?” she asks softly. “Hey.”

“Hey, I spoke to Dirk about the Money Guard contract.”

“Yay! How did it go?”

“Like shit. I insulted his son and he’s listening to everything Randall is saying about me.”

“Oh no.”

“I think they’re paving the way to get rid of me—like I’m in some kind of breach of contract and they’ll rightfully dismiss me.”

“You need to leave. Anything has to be better than staying there.”

“The sooner I’m out of here, the better. I’m just worried about getting a reference. There’s no way Randall is going to give me one, especially after I went behind his back to talk to Dirk.”

“You’ll be fine. You just need someone to give you a chance to prove yourself. From everything you’ve told me, you’re dedicated and hardworking.”

“Dirk told me I need to develop a... work ethic,” I spit out.

“Well, you know that’s not true. Can you talk to the man you worked for before Dirk?”

“He’s not operating a business anymore, remember?”

“I know, but he still might give you a reference.”

“Yeah, maybe.”

“There’s no harm in asking.”

“Mmm.”

“Remember what you said to me? We’ve only got one life. Live it the way you want.”

I grunt in response. “Now who’s the one giving good advice, huh?”
