“Yeah,” I say.

Have we made enough small talk yet?

“How are the books going?” Amber asks Lainey.

Nope, Lainey’s turn for small talk now.

“Good.” Lainey can’t keep the smile off her face. “Really good. My book goes to print in two months’ time.”

“Awesome.”

Her editor loves the revised edition of her book, and she’s just pitched a new idea to her editor about two couples who need to switch partners because they’re currently dating the wrong person for them. Her editor loved it, and I do, too.

“How’s your dad?” Lucas asks.

“He’s okay. Things are better between him and Tara now.”

“Things were bad?”

“Didn’t I tell you? Tara quit medicine. She’s pregnant.”

“Shit, no way.”

“You can probably imagine how Dad took it.”

“They fell out?”

“They’re talking now. Progress is slow, but Dad is trying.”

Okay, now I’m starting to feel annoyed. I haven’t met Lainey’s dad yet, and I hate the reminder that Lucas not only knows Lainey’s dad, but Lainey’s dad liked Lucas so much that Lainey didn’t tell him for months they broke up. I also hate the fact Lucas is still so friendly with Lainey—still cares for her so much—when he hurt her the way he did.

Then again, who could spend two and a half years with Lainey and not care about her? She has me wrapped around her finger, even if she doesn’t know it.

As if Lainey can feel how annoyed I’m getting, she squeezes my hand.

Finally, after a few more minutes of small talk, Lainey taps my knee—her signal it’s time to go.

“Well, I think Lainey and I are going to head off,” I say, trying not to look too smug about the fact I’m about to have her to myself.

“Already?” asks Cass, sounding disappointed.

“An early night is in order, I think,” Lainey says. “Ben and I are tired.”

“Tired, my arse,” Duncan retorts, seeing right through our excuse.

Too bad. I don’t care if Duncan is looking at Lainey and me as if he knows exactly what we’re thinking. I don’t care if everyone knows I can’t keep my hands off my girl for another minute. I’m rarely polite at the best of times, and I don’t have it in me to pretend I’m not about to take this woman home and fuck the daylights out of her.

The moment Lainey stands up, I give her arse a gentle squeeze, and the look she sends me has me saying goodbye to everyone in a lust-filled haze.

She’s in my arms the moment we’re out of the restaurant. My hands go straight to her backside, where I can squeeze her and mould her against me. People shuffle past us, and I know we’re probably in their way, but I don’t care as she presses her lips to mine and kisses me as if she’s ravenous for me. All I want right now is her, to breathe her in, to love her.

Her head goes back and I dive into her neck, kissing her, biting her and then licking her. She’s holding on to me as if I’m the only thing stopping her from dropping to the ground. When she moans softly, I have to reach into my pants and adjust myself.

If we don’t get out of here right now, I’m going to take her against the wall of Barnaby’s, and something tells me that as much as Lainey is into this now, she’s not going to enjoy being arrested for indecent exposure.

Neither will I, for that matter.

Forcing myself to slow down, I wrench my mouth away from her.
