“Does that make a difference?” Harper raised her eyebrows as she spoke. “Like, do you think you’re going to be upset if he doesn’t call?”

“I don’t know. I mean, yes, but it’s because I really like him. I don’t see him not calling and me getting upset because he was the one I gave my virginity to. On the same note, I did want to wait until it was with the right person, so I just hope I’m not telling myself I’m not going to be upset when I’m really going to be upset, you know?”

“I know,” Harper said. “And in all honesty, I’m going to tell you right now that I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you. It’s just a day, and he did tell you he was going to the doctor. That tells me that he cares enough to let you know that he’s not coming in, and he didn’t want you to worry.”

“Right,” I said. “But at the same time, what if he’s just doing this with the doctor to get out of coming to work? I know I’m being really negative here, but it’s hard for me to talk to anyone about this because of the pact, and they are all being really surprised with the fact I chose to give my virginity away to Cole.”

“At the end of the day, you are the only person who knows if you gave it to the right person. But I’m telling you right now, if you care about him like you say you do, and if he’s really as great as you say he is, then I’m not even entertaining the idea that this was a bad idea. I just want you to be smart. I mean, not that you’re not smart, but I don’t want you to throw yourself in head over heels with this guy when you just now are getting to know him,” Harper told me.

I nodded. She did have a point. I had a bad tendency to get too involved with the men I dated, and this had potential to be even worse. I went further with Cole than I had any other man before, and that made him special to me.

“You’re right,” I said. “I’m just going to cool off about it and wait for him to come in tomorrow. But that’s the other thing. Do you think I should keep paying him to work with Romeo? It feels a little weird with us sleeping together to then cut him a check, you know?”

“I would keep your business out of this,” Harper told me. “You two do what you do off the clock, then you pay him for what he does on the clock, you see?”

“Okay,” I said with another nod. “Okay, I can do that. Thank you.”

“Of course,” Harper grinned from ear to ear. “Gosh, it seemed like the day would never come for either of us, and now here we are, both of us with men who really are something. I’m so happy for you!”

She gave me another hug, and I squeezed her in return.

“I’m a little freaked out right now, but thank you,” I said. “Really, thank you.”

We talked for a short while longer, then Harper had to get back to the City. She had to get home to start cooking dinner, and it wasn’t going to be long before I closed up the office to get out and take care of the horses for the night.

I was glad I chose to tell her about how things had gone with Cole. It gave me hope that he was going to get a hold of me soon, and I didn’t have to stress about this.

Love was a complicated thing in my world on a good day, and after sleeping with him, I had made it a lot more complicated in my own mind. But, that didn’t change a thing about how I felt about doing what I’d done. I was still glad that I had gone through with it, and I couldn’t wait to see him again.

I just hoped when I did, we were on the same page with each other.

I really liked what we had going, there was no denying that. And it could continue forever as far as I was concerned.

There was no denying it. I really liked Cole. A lot.

I just hoped he felt the same about me.
