“I can give you two days a week,” I told her. That wasn’t a whole lot for a horse that was going to be under that level of stress, but I wasn’t sure how much time I was going to have to devote to this animal with Maveric still in my care. I had to reach him, too, and though his owner hadn’t put a deadline on when, I knew the sooner I was able to work with him, the better.

He was only getting older and meaner by the day standing in that stall, and I didn’t want that for him. He was a living being, and he deserved a life out in the open. I couldn’t leave him back here. But he couldn’t be out with other people and horses when he had this attitude. It was a problem I myself was dealing with, so I wasn’t sure I was going to have the time to go to another facility during the week to help with another horse.

Not to mention the fact that this was probably that nurse’s friend. I had a feeling she would want the help, but after a few days went by and I didn’t hear anything, I all but let that go and went in a different direction with my schedule. So, it rather surprised me when she came back at me and told me she wasn’t going to be able to do that.

“I’m going to need you here at least five days a week,” she said.

“Excuse me?”

“That’s right,” she said. “I have hopes for him, and in my experience with people, you need to deal with this kind of thing right away. I feel like if you come in and work with him five days a week, we can hit this hard and knock it out of the park. I don’t want to drag it out on him more than it already has been. I just want him to settle and move along with the rest of the horses here.”

“That’s not going to be cheap,” I warned. “I don’t do this strictly for the money, but I hope you know having me at another facility that much is going to come out of your pocket.”

“I’m aware,” she said. “I had a feeling someone with this kind of reputation would be pricey, but I also want the best of the best.”

“Alright,” I said. “I’ll come take a look at him. Where is this place?”

She gave me the directions before hanging up. Ham looked at me with a raised eyebrow, and I quickly filled him in on the conversation I’d had with my nurse, and now the call from the friend.

“I guess she’s going to want me there five days a week. If it looks good, you going to come cover for me out here?” I asked.

“If you pay me, you know I will,” he said.

“Give up your city life for a few days?” I teased.

“You know I will,” he said, not at all bothered with the teasing.

I shook my head. Ham headed for the barn, but I gathered my things to take back inside. I was going to have to get going if I wanted to get out to the new facility by lunch, and I really did. The sooner I saw what I was dealing with, the better as far as I was concerned.

She texted me the address, and while I didn’t do a lot with phones, I did use the GPS to find the location.

Pulling up outside, I saw the woman I figured was Raya standing outside. Younger than I expected and hot as hell. If this wasn’t the woman I was here to meet, I made a mental note to track her down and get her number before I left the facility, that was for sure.

She made eye contact and waved, heading toward my truck with a smile. It had to be her.

And if this was the client I would be working with for the next few weeks, perhaps I would find a way to open my schedule to accommodate the five day a week requests she’d asked for.

I could argue this was for the best of the horse, after all. And my wallet, for that matter.

She knew it wasn’t going to be cheap, and she had been perfectly okay with that. Of course, looking around the place, it didn’t seem anyone here was hurting for money. It could just be the illusion as I did with my own facility, but there was something about it that made me think she really had money.

And I could use that right now.
